Distributor O'Ring- "still leaking"

All,

I replaced my O'Ring this weekend and I noticed it's still leaking (slower), but
leaking. I got the O'ring from the dealership and no issues with the install.

Did i miss something or got a bad or the wrong part or is this common? I tighten down the two bolts so not sure that to try next before trying another ring

Btw, I have a 93 LE w/ 105xxx on the clock.

Also looking at timing belt kits on Rockauto & Ebay. Does name brand matter with these? Currently looking at Dayco kit w/ water pump. Any advice is helpful.

Thanks in advance

If you twisted the o-ring, or pinched it as you installed it, that could make it leak. Mine was leaking, but the oil was going through the distributor and out the cap, but this probably would have been noticeable before you pulled yours out if was the same issue though.

Thanks for good ideas...!

Not sure of the part #, but will check later today. Didn't realize it was possibly
two different rings. I didn't notice any oil in the cap and will pull and either re-seat it or replace with another one.

When I purchased the car, I noticed it had been leaking for some time, but also
realized it was common issue. May consider a new distro later on....:frown:

Thanks All...

The leak could be from the corners of the bearing cap. It's not really a bearing cap, but the top semicircle of where the distributor fits into the head. There is supposed to be seal packing there to help seal the valve cover gasket to the cylinder head. The oil could be leaking there down to the bottom of the distributor.

To the point DrZ made you should double check if the leak might be from directly above the distributor, where the valve cover gasket covers the "half moon". That area is supposed to have a light application of RTV sealant on the sharp angles before putting the valve cover w/gasket on top. Over time the gasket and/or RTV might have given way and caused a leak.

If it's truly from the distributor shaft and you don't have any internal oil leaks inside the distributor (you have to remove the dust cover below the rotor to know for sure) then the o-ring is likely pinched or you could have the wrong o-ring. The correct parts number is 90099-14091. You probably know already but you need to coat the shaft and the o-ring with oil when putting the o-ring on so you don't damage it.

I can't see a reason to get a new distributor unless you have an internal leak and your distributor housing is full of oil. You would know that by now though as you'd likely have driveability issues.

I did see the poster who suggested silicone between the distributor and head to seal. I guess a light coating of RTV might work, but if you're doing the o-ring correctly there shouldn't be a need to use RTV.

Thanks so much RollaDad!

I did not use a coating of oil to lubricate prior to putting it back in and will pull to check everything as you mentioned to include the valve cover above.

Appreciate you taking time to explain..!
