Do I need to change my transmission filter?

Hey everyone, I've been doing some maintenance on my 2003 corolla with 120k miles and since I have some nice weather right now I wanted to change the transmission fluid since it hasn't been done yet(the fluid is still pink and transparent with no burnt odor).I was doing some research on the filter and I've been getting mixed results. Looking on AutoZone I see they sell a replacement filter which I was planning on changing one I dropped and cleaned the pan, but after picking up the Toyota T-IV and taking to the tech he said that there is no filter that needs to be replaced, but has a brass filter instead. Should I replace the filter with a new one from AutoZone and drop the pan, or just cycle the new fluid?

We have owned a 2005 Sienna since new, and recently bought a 2006 Matrix used.

For the Sienna the recommendation from dealers and forums has been to leave the filter alone ... clean it if you want but not really necessary because the metal mesh won't clog with fine particles (i.e. clutch pack material). However check the plug when you drain the pan to make sure there are no metal particles -- if there are, then pull the pan, inspect and clean the filter. This filter is supposedly not replaced, and the pan does not need to be pulled, during normal maintenance.

I now have the Matrix in hand and am preparing for a tranny fluid flush. From what I am understanding here, this tranny has the same metal mesh type filter, in which case I would assume the same maintenance strategy for the Sienna applies here also.

One drawback with replacing the metal mesh filter with a paper/foam one, is that you have now created a routine non-trivial maintenance item where there wasn't necessarily one before.
