I started my car, gave my friend the keys and she walked away. What happens if I drive away?

The car will continue to run until yo turn it off. Also for you manual guys, if you stall the car without the fob inside you can still restart the car. Just push in the clutch and push the start button (basically don't turn the car off if you stall). I found this out when I dropped the family off at the grocery store and went to look for a parking space.

it will run but may freak out if you shift from park to drive, and will beep incessantly also prompting you to shift back to park.

Yes its annoying, but i believe its useful so that some ding bat doesn't drive away without a key, assuming they could tolerate the noise, and then would be stranded wherever they stopped without a key to start it back up.... So yeah, toyota knows what they're doing keeping stupid folks from getting in trouble xD

I can't image some dip driving a keyless car miles or minutes away... lol!
Happens - not sure if it only beeps when the car is started without the fob present.

Example I remember reading: Man and wife get in car - he doesn't realize he doesn't have fob with him. She has fob in her purse so no warning. They drive off and he drops her off and continues on a 2-3 hour drive. She ends up having to FedEx him a key fob as that was cheaper than getting one replaced.

Pretty sure new cars require the key to allow ignition. There are safety mechanisms in place to prevent starting from a roll, else vehicles would be horribly susceptible to theft.

Can't say I've driven any of my cars without the key being present, the warning chimes are enough to make me go back for them.

I did drive a project car from my HS shop class without the keys, on numerous occasions...but I don't think any of you are referring to driving without keys in that manner...
I can't either. I have deliberately hopped in a car without keys and moved it in the yard or in the garage etc, but never out on the road... I don't understand how someone could be so absent minded! Those beeps, messages on the info center, etc are there for a reason!

Ignition essentially IS still in the equation.

In a traditional key car, the ignition switch has four positions: Off, Accessory, Run, and Start.

Smart key does also, but it is changed by presses of the Start button, not by turning the key blade.
