Does anyone know how to permanently disable the DRL, i want to use the auto light feature but dont care for the DRL. Is there a fuse or something i can take off or unplug to turn that off?

The DRL on your car is a safety feature. It helps other drivers see You. If you don't like the way they look change them or find alternative DRL lighting. If you have an accident and the other driver points out that your DRL's aren't operating you could be charged with negligence for disconnecting or defeating them. Are you willing to take that chance?

Few things are worse in a storm than a grey or white car driving with their DRLs or headlights off. It's not always about you, it's safer for the other people on the road. I go one step further when I'm on the highway and put my headlights on, so the tail lights come on, also. I wish they were activated with the DRLs. In Canada, there is no switch to turn DRLs off.

Right on, smacd. I turn my lights on too when my wipers are on. Having the taillights on is also important as you wrote. Since there are so many drivers that do not turn their headlights on which is a law in 30 states, I like Nissan's feature where the headlights turn on after the wipers complete four passes. That is a great safety feature that I feel every vehicle should have, especially on the highway as you also wrote.

I agree that having DRL's or headlights on during bad weather increases safety for everyone on the road, but on the Venza it is the drivers choice to use them or not, they are not automatic in the US. The OP can very easily put his switch on the DRL OFF position and run with no lights at all until he decides to turn his headlights on.

With the setup he is trying to run, his headlights would come on automatically and probably before he manually turned them on, this is much safer than running in OFF mode all of the time!

Have to agree with Streaker. They are a safety feature that helps other cars see you especially on cloudy or bad weather days and certainly on the highways (even on sunny days). Mandatory in Canada and a lot of other countries, probably will be in the States soon. You might want to check with your insurance agent before disabling them.

I did this on my 09 Corolla but it's not as simple to do on a toyota as reprogramming it. I had to cut one wire behind the glovebox that disabled the auto headlight/DRL feature. Then wire a relay from that wire to activate the fogs. This way the fog lights were no longer dependent on the lowbeams being on and were running all the time.

I did however find the fog bulbs weren't lasting as long so I haven't tried this on my Venza yet.

Cars can also get lost to oncoming traffic in heat shimmer, which I'm sure you have plenty of.

Lights don t auto come on in DRL off...

Thing that gets me is that the damn DRLs come on even when parking lights are selected! this sucked for the local drive through Xmas light display last Xmas. I was blinding the guy in front of me.

Say what you want but I've always heard DRLs improve your visibility to other drivers even in daylight. After watching a few episodes of "Brain Games" I am absolutely sure of it. Especially if you are not in the other drivers center of vision. Peripheral vision is most sensitive to motion and light. Hence the advantage of having DRLs even in bright daylight.

I believe DRL is a function that can be disabled through the Techstream software at the dealer, for USA cars only. The option is not available for Canada as DRL is required by law and it is an offense to disable.

I asked my local dealership and the service advisor said it isn't as easy to disable the DRLs as pulling out some relay, they would have to do custom wiring. I'm hoping there's an expert on here that can help with finding the wires.

Got an idea for you, is there any voltage related relay. I am saying something not active under 12V while turn on if over. So you install it in line just like those wire set for HID with that to control on-off of high beam

I google and find this:
http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_110548/article.html
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.21.gyO2TW&id=24422888186

If it's me, I would get a 9005 HID harness, and put such switch between the control line from stock high beam socket. Will also do a bypass circuit to make the DRL work as normal in case you need it somehow. GL!

For those wondering how to disable DRL (I have LED high beams and it either flickers or are very bright with a canbus decoder/capacitor kit installed), you just have to cut or depin (kinda tricky, Google for images, the connector is a Sumimoto TS series to see how it's latched) a single wire, it's the DRL signal coming from the ECU, going to the light control circuit inside the engine fuse box

Remove the scuff plate, then remove the LH driver side kick pannel, you'll find a jonction box there, the 3rd gray connector from the bottom is the DA1, here look for the green wire on pin 8, this is the DRL signal

You can also have a go at it in the engine bay, it's the lower 18 pin connector of the unit D (the one that pulls out), you'll have to disconnect/depin/cut the green wire going to pin 16
