Wow! Talk about a coincidence, I have a '93 Geo Prizm (which may not be available in YOUR country. BTW – Congrats 806,000km = MORE than HALF A MILLION MILES. That's a bunch.) Anyway my '93 Prizm has a cruise control that hasn't worked in 6+ years. I finally got a mechanic who diagnosed the problem, and he eliminated everything BUT the ECU. I found an outfit based in Florida that specializes in rebuilding and reprogramming these units specific to the vehicle's VIN. I bought one programmed for my VIN, then about three months later (last week) I started removing the dash components necessary to expose the unit (right where everyone else is telling you it is.) Imagine my surprise that when I finally got everything off and could see what was in there, I found NOT an ECU like the one I bought, but instead another unit that specifically said “Cruise Control.” It had a Toyota part number on it (88240-12130) and a google search by that part number gave me numerous links to used units all over the U.S., and one of them was right here in Southern California's San Fernando Valley. I contacted the vendor outside of Ebay's communication links and picked up the unit in person. I decided that BEFORE I install this unit I need a couple of questions answered:
1. My car MUST have an ECU somewhere, but I'll be damned if I know where to find it. Does anybody know?
2. This cruise control unit I purchased came from a 1994 Prizm with merely 130,222 miles on it, so it must have been removed from the car a LONG TIME AGO. THAT Prizm had a 1.6 liter motor in it. My Prizm has a 1.8 liter. Also, I'll bet that the '94 Prizm had an automatic transmission. Mine is 5 speed transaxle, like your '90. Is any reprogramming of the cruise unit necessary?
I'm reposting this “reply” as a new thread in the 7th generation group due to the vehicle's year. This new thread will have a few pictures, IF I can figure out how to attach them. <g> Have a look if you want. I usually get very informative replies from these guys.
