I would just live with it, a lot of Toyota steering columns have made noise over the last several years, sometimes you can fix a noise like that by replacing the lower steering shaft. I would use nothing but Toyota OEM parts, an aftermarket reman steering column would scare me if even available.
Sometimes spraying some grease into the lower steering shaft spline will quiet them down.

 

Look for one from a salvage yard. I would do that instead of a remanufactured one.

I had my replaced under warranty too. My XRS was an early build. If it were to happen again and have to spend that much money out of pocket, I would just get a new car since our cars are getting to 10 years already.

 

So it's best to avoid models that have EPS?

 

All 10th gen corollas have EPS. In fact any north American Toyota uses EPS now.

 

True, How reliable are they before they would need repair and would it be expensive would it be? I know they say the trend for many cars are to become disposable. Is Toyota going the same way?

 

Think the corolla is bad? Look up the cobalt. Issues abound. I can find dozens at the LKQ because the EPS went out.

 

This recalls a true story that happened in a suburb of Cleveland last week. A Honda Accord was totaled not do to an accident, but do to it being struck by lightening on the highway. The bolt damaged the various computer systems in the car including the Air Bag

 

Read my post in that Youtube video, Sort by date. I fixed the issue with spraying grease inside the telescoping shaft. I tried EVERYTHING and was on the brink of replacing it with a new one or selling the car.
I even popped off the round cap you see in :25 and added thick grease and that did not help. Spraying into the column fixed my issue.
