Hi guys,

Just want to know. I have the GEN 4 Camry with the 3L 1MZ engine. If I wanted to put the 3.3L VVTi (3MZ-FE)engine (from the GEN 5 Camry) What kind of things do I need to get it all running? (eg; do I need a new gearbox?)

Regards,
Leasaunce

^ even the 5.5 v6 SE?

and the tranny should be fine

from what my mechanic said, since we've talked about this, is basically the entire engine including intake system, and then a full ecu swap along with wiring harness....

but I don't think that anybody's done it yet....you can do it and tell us :D

I dont think this swap has been done yet so the exact parts list is not known. You will need at least the complete motor, engine harness, ecm etc. Your best bet would be to get a front clip so you can have all the parts from the donor at your disposal. Once someone does that, they can figure out what is needed and what isnt making the swap easier in the future.

*edit EYE8 beat me to it.

i'm sure he can still find a 3mz, from what i know get the new 5 speed gearbox if your staying auto that thing is SWEET. it makes the 4 banger not suck in the 1st 2 gears. so youc an guess just the engine and i guess you dont have the vvti 1mz so you need the ecu too. oh since you have to change the ecu you need to change it to dbw. or if you do have the vvti it should be a direct swap. since the 3vz is more or less just a stroked 1mz.

now this raises questions with me, are the cranks swapable. this would be an eaiser swap to storke it to 3.2 i belive (they gave it a little more bore)

aussie gen5's are 1mz'z
I know...

But the Toyota Kluger uses the 3.3L VVTi (3MZ-FE). So i'm thinking of getting it from them, if not I will import them from USA :D .

But yeah, Thanks Guys!!

If the OP had ever gone through with his swap and posted the results, 14 years ago, we'd know. Unfortunately, since this thread simply stopped my guess is they never bothered to do it.
My advice is to follow gLok's post #4 above, and the one just above it: get the completed donor vehicle (or at least the entire front end) so that you are sure to get all the parts you might need.

Thankyou. Might have to go and look at the Avalon in person.

Dunno if it'll work or if there's differences between AU-market and US-market in mounting, but I'll offer this: I had a PitA RX300 to deal with once; the guy got a junkyard 1MZ to replace his busted 1MZ, but he got a late-model 1MZ out of a gen5 Camry. So it used the timing belt kit for a gen5 Camry 1MZ or a 3MZ instead of the earlier kit meant for '01 and before 1MZ. It mounted up just fine, but I know 3MZ-powered crossovers have different mounting that wraps around the control arms (officially, to change the front control arms on a 3MZ, Toyota wants you to pull the engine).

Hey boys sorry to bring back this thread. I have the gen 4 camry and want to do the 3mzfe swap. There's a 1mzfe for sale from a Aussie lexus es300 2001-2005 which really is a 3mzfe as it has 6 coil packs, plastic intake manifold and electronic throttle body. As the wiring harness is can bus and my car is obd, I need a conversion kit. Any thoughts and yes Ive seen pictures and vids of 2grfe turbo'd 2grfe swaps into gen 4 camry so there must be some way the engine can bolt to the gen 4 subframe. If you want it done, it can be done
