i car faxed a carolla i'm buying. it's technically a one owner, but the title transferred to the wife in a divorce settlement, making her the second owner. she was issued a EML title. i don't understand why. on the transfer date the car had 44,000 after 4 yrs. i can watch it progress 6 months at a time, year by year when it was taken to the dealership. it really only had 44000 miles. after her divorce, i can see by dealership visits, she averaged 5000 miles a year. totaling 96000 miles.
according to carfax advisor " an EML title is issued when the owner discloses an odometer rollover to DMV." so when it was transferred to the wife, someone screwed up. i think. i've gone over the car fax month by month and it shows mileage progressing every 6 months. some one would have had to put 100,000 on the car between oil changes.
anyone have a thought?

The titles I have seen have a little check box that says something about mileage being off or exceeds odo blah blah blah.
If I was a guy and wanted to screw over my ex, when signing title, I would check the box. Instant EML >:D

You'll have to dig deeper. Check with the DMV to see if it's possible to check registration histories. The odometer can't be reset easily. Now, it's possible the odometer did malfunction at some point and stopped recording. Then, somehow it started working again.

What's the current mileage?

They could very easily change the cluster though, the mileage displayed is generally stored in the cluster. Sometimes you can get in with a scan tool and it will list ECM recorded miles.

Just a data point:

On a German car that had 6 digit mechanical odo, jacks at the Ohio E-check recorded a leading "1" one year and the correct "0" on a later visit. So...I got to pay $20x2 and they got me a flagged odometer. Oh, and also kicked the front door speaker grille, causing me to lose it. Had to buy another. So...I'd look to dealer service records for accurate mileage. Now if it truly got reset after 300k (miles? km?), good luck.

Sounds like you have collected enough information to prove the odometer reading is accurate. If it can't be corrected then you still have the evidence to support your position. It's also physically impossible to put 100k miles on a car in less than the 40 days and nights they drove the 64 Mercury Comets to put 100k miles on them on the banks of Daytona Speedway in 1964. That was at 100 miles per hour, 40 days, 24-7.

Op, other than visits to the dealerships for service, does CarFax report any emissions testing? I suspect that's where the error was likely to take place or at a dealership. Without the full service records, removing the title will be difficult. Hope all of this info helps you out.
