How far can you go in EV mode before the battery is drained?

I just bought a 2013 Prius v, and I'm not sure, but the battery seemed to drain fast in EV mode (from every bar except the top being lit, down to 2 bars), poking around in a parking lot- for a few minutes-about a 1/2 mile. There was some stop and go in the parking lot.

I was a little disappointed, so I tried to see the range on a flat road- keeping it EV and a steady speed (slowly accelerated to about 30mph, and kept it there. After a mile, it had gone down three bars, less than halfway. After another mile, down to 2 bars. Another few hundred yards, (2.25 miles total) and the engine started.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Sounds about right but I haven't done a test like that myself. You need to understand that the hybrid system in the Toyota Hybrids is meant to supplement the gas powered motor, not do much on it's own.
Check the Camry Hybrid forum out. There is a user "Whitesands" that posts there and keeps track of his battery powered range. In fact he recommends conditioning your traction battery by doing what you are doing for multiple times every now and then to keep you battery healthy. He claims that after a couple "conditioning" runs he gets a little more all electric range but I wouldn't expect any significant changes.
