IPOD adapter install on 2006 Avalon

Hey guys and gals. Wanted to share with you my IPOD adapter install on my 2006 Avi with JBL stereo w/o nav. Removing the console and stereo/panels was not very difficult once you have instructions. The USASPEC PA15-TOY adapter is very easy to install and works as advertised. It has an auxilliary input which I used to connect a Kenwood Excelon KOS-A300 External Media Controller. I can connect my music pendrives or IPOD to it; also has Bluetooth feature and Sirius/XM or/and HD radio option. I installed the Kenwoods display where the ashtray/lighter were. I put the joypad controller where the seat heater controls would have been. The price for the Kenwood was a special, just $80.00 at Crutchfield; regular price $320.00. Works super great and display is awesome. Ran the IPOD and USB cables under the console and into to the compartment behind the joypad. Whole install took me about 4 hours. Here are some picks of the install. Enjoy!

I just received the Crutchfield cat. over the weekend. My wife was asking about the same ipod adapter :)

what trim do you have? XLS? the big control you placed is where the heated seat controls were. What happened to your heated seat?

What happened to the steering mount audio control? Does it have any effect on it? Who's the bluetooth? ok? good? My wife really want BT on her Avalon. (Limited with NAV so not sure how the installation works)

So the Kenwood unit let you plug in any USB drive with music files on it and PLAY? thanks

Trim is XLS; didnt have the heated seat option. Not available nor needed in Puerto Rico since temperature rarely goes below 65-70 degrees.

Remember I installed 2 different adapters. With the USASPEC PA15-TOY IPOD adapter the steering wheel controls work fine and also the Avalons display. The Kenwood is an auxilliary input device which is able to control various devices like IPOD, XM/HD radio and Bluetooth connectivity to your cellphone. You need extra modules for the Bluetooth and Sirius/HD. With the Kenwood you can control only volume via steering wheel.

In the Avalons case the Kenwood must be connected to the USASPEC's auxilliary inputs for it to work; so you need both adapters.

I use 2GB pendrives for my mp3's and they work fine. I tried an external USB 20gb laptop harddrive but the adapter doesnt have enough DC power output to make it work.:chug:

The bluetooth is pretty cool, I wonder if there is a module that is more dedicated for blue tooth w/ less of the other stuff. I have the PA15-toy that I wrote a guide and have it set up similar to yours: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=362055

I love how you can control the music through the CD controls. The only problem I had with mine, is that it doesn't show the text on the screen. It shows track/time only. The only way I got mine working with text was not reliable enough to use it.

I also didn't know some Avalons came with ashtrays and cig lighters. All the ones I have seen up till now had tape decks and nav controls.

Checked your thread and noticed your radio is different from mine. I use the AM/SAT button to control the PA15-TOY. The song thats playing appears on the display. You're not missing much because you can only see the first ten caracters(including spaces). They do not move or scroll so display is basically useless. Maybe the people at USASPEC can address this problem in future releases. Here are a couple of pics:

Kingo

can you provide some tips on how to remove radio panel and the center console panel (cup holder, shifter area)

Trying to get a USA SPec but want to know the steps before ordering the unit.
Also, happened to know the different between the 15 and 20 model? not sure which one

We have a 05 Limited (JBL sound with Build in NAV, not sure about SAT radio though)

Here's the steps to remove the radio panel and the head unit:
  • Disconnet the negative battery terminal to prevent an accidental short circuit
  • Unclip and remove the small trim piece from the left side of the panel above the vent (the wood trim piece). It removes by pulling it out (fingernails, small screwdriver)
  • Unclip and remove panel above the steering wheel (the part that surrounds the start button).
  • Unclip and remove entire panel surrounding the radio, including the A/C controls and vents.
  • Remove the head unit by removing 4 10-mm bolts securing it in the dash.
  • Unplug the wiring harnass(es).
  • Install is the reverse

Three questions regarding this thread...

Hello,

I bought my 2007 Avalon XLS yesterday and I love it. However, I want to update the sound system to include [1] Bluetooth Handsfree, [2] Satelite Radio and [3] iPod Connectivity. Of course, [4] the USB option would also be nice.

As such, I am really happy to have found this thread. However, it is pretty confusing to me.

QUESTION ONE: Right off the bat, I don't know if my radio is compatible. Here is a photo of my radio. I see some sites indicate I need an AM/SAT button. I don't have that. However, I do have a cassette deck that I don't want. The cassette deck is in the same spot the Kenwood 5-line display was installed on this posting.

QUESTION TWO: I don't really understand why Kingo bought two items, not sure what the reason was. Is it because the Kenwood package requires a 3.5mm input and the radio may not have one?

QUESTION THREE: How do I know what I should purchase if I want Satelite and Bluetooth handsfree? Seriously, how do people figure this out?

My sincere thanks to anyone who may be able to help with some thoughts on this.

By the way: On another site, I did find detailed pdf instructions for taking the dash apart. Five little pdf files with incredible details, if anyone ever wants them.

Thanks again,

Lobo

@Lobo...I think your radio uses a different adapter than the one that has AM/SAT. The reason I got the Kenwood is so I could also play music using ordinary pendrives...just another option besides the Ipod.

The Avalon's radio doesnt have AUX input but the ipod adapter has,,to which I connected the Kenwood.

You could connect the the satelite radio thru the ipod adapters AUX input(probably the bluetooth also) . In your case you wouldnt need the Kenwood.

I've used Crutchfield for over 15 years. I did the same for my 05 Touring Avalon, but didn't use the joystick or install the screen as you did on yours. Otherwise excellent postings and great job. I did however, remove all door speaker, rear door speakers and factory subwoofer and Dynamat on the inside of the doors and out skin (in between) the doorpanel. The front speakers were factory 6 1/2", bt there was an adaptor to allow for the 6x9s. Crutchfield had the suggested speakers and now my sounds is MUCH better than factory. Only problem is I get a little rattle from the rear dash from the 10" subwoofer and will end up removing and placing it in a custom made box in the back of the car (trunk area). Again...great posting, looks very nice and I see you got some great tunes listed on your screen :)

Thanks,,it sounds pretty good...but not great. I've been considering swapping ALL the speakers and a few questions come to mind. Maybe you can help.:chug:

1- Do the 6.5 inchers fit the factory hole exactly?..or do you need adapter?..

2- How to remove door panels?

3- Are the 6.5 speakers you bought coaxial, full range or component?

4- How do you remove the rear shelf to get to the subwoofer?..Is it dual voice coil?..and how did you get a 10 incher to fit there?

I like this idea for retaining the factory deck (at least until we can afford the cost of a new deck), and from what I've read it looks like the KOS-A300 can take audio from (and charge) the iPad as well.

I've got a different idea for integrating the Kenwood's screen, but it will take some fancy sheet metal work with some thin plate aluminum I have. Soon as we can get ourselves an Avalon (got one lined up; cross your fingers), I'll start looking into this.
