I took apart my stock shifter to get the button and wires out on my 96. I don't remember having to extend the wires, and I mounted it right "under/next to" the ECT/PWR button so I didn't have a problem with the wire length.

well currently my stock shifter is quite ugly looking....the top is all peeling off and shit....so i want a new one....i've tried like 2 or 3 brands already.....either they are too short or the inner diameter's too small....oh btw.....do anyone know what the stock shifter shaft's diameter is?

If your new shifter has a button/switch on it, you don't need to pull the wires out.

But if it doesn't have a button/switch, pull the wires out and wire them to a switch.

I used a mini spdt (single pole double throw (3 prong) switch).

P.S. If you use a spdt switch, use the center pin and one of the outer pins.

It's really easy to do. When I changed my shifter I just bought a toggles switch and put it right under my ect button. People always ask me what's the button for. I tell 'em it's to self-destruct.
