Has anyone had a problem with the light refusing to reset after the tire was fixed. I have an 05 with the tire pressure monitoring system and no matter how many times I push the reset button, it always comes back on (yes I checked the tire pressures, all 4 tires are fine). I recently had the tires replaced, but the light problem was happening prior to the tire install. Any ideas?

One more to check!

Have exactly the same problem on an '05 Highlander and can't even find the reset button!
Same problem on a RAV4 (07)came to me today, and all 4 road tires were at 28 but the spare was at 22psi. Filled them all to 32 (spec for that vehicle), and the light went out. The owners manual had no indication for reset procedures other than "drive it around a while", after resetting the pressure.

Where is the reset button on the "05 Highlander?

On my 04 is on the bottom lip of the dash under the steering wheel a few inches to the right of the OBDII connector. You can't see it until you look under the front drivers side of the dash.

Shadsun, first of all let me ask you. Do you have OEM tires on your car or different aftermarket size tires? I am asking that because your 05 Highlander has different tire pressure check system than installed in 08 Highlanders. I found it out in Les Schwab because I have the same problem with my 05. Yes there is a reset button under the dash but the light always comes back after a few miles of driving after I reset it no matter how many times I reset it. The difference from 08 (where each tire has its own sensor) is that your 05 has a system that counts RPMs (roll per minute) of the tires and if your tire is flat than the light comes on your dash. The same thing happens if you have different tires/rims size like my Highlander that has 19" rims. In case you have OEM rims and tires my advise to check the pressure first and if light still comes back after resetting than I have no idea. Probably you can check it with the dealer.

Okay, here is what I have learned. The TPS system is part of the antilock system is monitored by the system as revs per minute. If the tires are more than 2 PSI different, the light will come on. IN order to reset the light, you have to push and hold it for about 10 seconds, until the light flashes about 3 times. This worked for me, good luck to everyone else. BTW, the spare has nothing to do with it, as the monitoring system would not be able to read the pressure in the spare.

For a 05', it does use the ABS wheel speed sensors to monitor tire pressure, and the signals are also used for the speedometer. The system has to be re-initialized every time the tire pressure is changed and even after tire rotation. After that, the vehicle need to be driven for half an hour to an hour before it learns the correct values to complete the process.

NEO so even after puting the summer tires back on my '04 HL. I SHOULD re-set the TPS even if they are the same size and did not trip the system on a 2 hour highway drive after swaping over?

Sounds right for me N.E.O. but let me ask you. What did you mean saying "The system has to be re-initialized every time the tire pressure is changed and even after tire rotation"? Does it mean to push and hold the reset button for 3 seconds till light comes out? I do not think the system will "learn" my new tire size (19") I think the light will come again and again because it will say the system that there's something wrong with the tires like it happens in my case.

Even though I cannot be 100% certain, unless the circumference of your tires is different than the stock tires, I don't believe your 19" tire size would make any difference in the system detection of a low tire pressure condition, since it is monitoring the input signals from all four wheel speed sensors to make comparison and determine if there is a tire low on pressure. From what I can understand, the system is learning the inputs from the sensors over a period of time to determine what is normal input. Then if it detects deviation from one of the sensors, it turns on the warning light. (A simplified description).

To reset or re-initialize the system, you have to initially push the reset button to turn off the light if it is on, then push and hold the button until the light blinks three time. After than, the vehicle needs to be driven for about an hour above 20 mph to complete the initialization.

DJ I believe the size of the tires does not matter, I have 275/40/20 on my 04 and my HL's low tire indicator has never turned on due to the different oem tire size....just my input.....the tires/rims theselves does not have any sensors, I made sure of it when I made the switch

good luck

well, lets see....mpg definitely decreased with the bigger rims/tires but it wasnt too bad. (esp now that gas has gone down to $2/gallon!!)

As for the ride, well I can say its better esp since i'm riding on 275/40's (I believe the recommendation is 245/45) so I'm riding with way wider tires. well worth it...no rubbing at all, it can be a bit more sensitive than oem (Ie. feel grooves a bit more) but no complaints here!

Thanks everybody! With your help I solved this problem. I always pushed and held the button only one time and the light came away only for a few miles and then it came back, but yesterday I did as N.E.O. said. I pushed and held the button one time until the light came away and then I pushed it second time and held it until the light blinked three time and then disappeared. I drove about 50 Mi after that and the light is still off. Thank you guys for helping me to solve this problem. :)

Thanks for this info guys ... I was experiencing the same issue after I had my tires balanced & rotated. I thought my mechanic screwed up one of my sensors.

I read the manual several times and I don't recall ever stating that the light had to blink three times ... oh well, thanks to you guys it got fixed.
