MT Swap From a 5-speed to a 6-speed

I would love to swap out my 5-speed MT for the 6-speed MT from an 11th gen. I've been trying to find out some information on the possible swap with little luck. I know it would bolt up okay since the engine is the same but I'm not sure about any other possible problems. HAs anyone else looked into this? Anyone working for Toyota that could help? Thanks!

I know the code is different but the Corolla trans has nothing to do with the trans in my MR2. The bell housing should be the same since it's the same engine in the 10th & 11th gen Corolla.

I would do is look at the difference in ratios between the 5 & 6 speeds. If they just shortened the ratios and ended up with a short first gear and higher running RPMS in 6th than the 5speed had like they did in the 9th Gen, Xrs' (many had been disappointed with it as they seemed to be constantly shifting) it may not be worth the effort..unless you like that sort of thing...which some do I suppose.

Just saying.
I don't think it's like the 9th gen Corolla. The RPM's in the 11th gen Corolla in 6th gear are much lower then the 10th gen in 5th gear.

In order to do this swap, I'm pretty sure you would have to get the EC65 transmission(the 6 speed manual) and an ECU for the 11th gen Corolla. It would be a really cool and unique mod but my suggestion is to wait a little bit because MWR are starting to work on the 2ZR-FE and the transmissions so let's just see what they will build for the 5 speed manual you have first.:)
I was going to keep an eye out for a 6 speed trans from an 11th gen if this would work. Why would I need an ECU from the 11th gen though? Couldn't I just slip it into 6th gear? Why would the current ECU know any different?

While true, I would want to make more certain before I did it!

Even with mechanical shift, the design could include the information of the position of the gear for the ECU if Toyota likes.
Interesting. What should be a simple swap might be a headache & not worth it. If I had to swap the ECU I don't think that I would bother. :crying:

They could, but I would assume that you would need to modify them in order to fit the 2ZR-FE since they are different engines.
The gear ratios are all out of whack though for the 10th gen. There are 6 gears but they are spread over the same range. I would like the current 6-speed to get an extra tall 6th gear to improve why mpg even more. :D

So does anyone live in MI? I asked MonkeyWrench Racing about the swap & they want to do it but need a car to try it on. This was the response I got from them.

"We're interested in performing this swap but don't have a car on hand. The transmission will bolt in and the axles will work. The mounts and shifter/cables are in question. Would you be able to bring the car to us for the job?"

Thanks,

Matt @ Monkeywrench

Heard from Monkeywrench today & they said that it should not have to worry about the ECU being changed. Good news!!!!

So where are any of this people that live in MI????

If you can drive to Alaska and back, why not do a trip to Michigan?

This is true but I'll bet nobody knows what the exact graphs look like for the 1.8L and with a MT you can still control the engine speed better so having an additional gear would be fine with me. The rpm point with my 5MT doesn't bother me even though it's higher then the 4AT. The engine is not a lot louder at 3200 rpm then at 2500 rpm.

I still haven't heard if Monkeywrench has been able to confirm this. I've asked and check with a lot of people and from all angles it looks like it should work just fine. You will have to use a 11th gen clutch though. You will also have to find a used 6-speed trans!

I did this swap back in January, its a descent upgrade.

the video below has me testing my car at half throttle from 3rd gear to 6th gear

So how did it go putting in the 6-speed? What issues did you have? Was it a straight swap or did you have to work through some problems? Any help would be appreciated as several of us are looking at this trans swap. My biggest issue has been to find a 6-speed from a wrecked 11th gen Corolla.

I am always hesitant on my thoughts on an 'upgrade' or 'mod' when I see them driving it with the check engine light and other lights on in the console. Seems like still some bugs to work out of some kind.

Nothing for certain but everyone that I've asked has said that it should bolt up and work as the engine is the same. I've not been able to verify if the trans mounts are the same or different though.

:nerd:

On another note guys, since this is a tranny thread I thought I might ask this here

Has anyone ever tried to mount the 2AZ manual transmission to the 2ZR engine ?

I'm only asking cause I'm thinking of going in that direction, I've havent done all the research yet but I'm looking into getting some info on the internals

A couple weeks back I came out for a little night racing and I broke third gear and the output shaft :frown::surprise::crying:

I will be finding out if this works or not! I just found a 6-speed MT from a 2014 Corolla so I bought it. It only has 9870 miles on it. Very excited to see if this will work! I won't get to it until later this fall but I couldn't let it go with so few miles on it. I also found a full rear axle with disc brakes on it that I'm going to look at tomorrow! >:D

Well I won't be doing this for now. The points where the shift cables and linkage connect are different than the 5-speed. I will have to use the shifter cables form the 11th gen Corolla. I also found out that I would need to use the shifter out of an 11th gen Corolla but that it wouldn't just swap in. I was hoping that I could just use the cables with my shifter but was told they were different. So for now this swap is on hold and I'll live with 5 gears. :D It can be done with some effort but I didn't want to get into it that much until I can verify some more details.

@SuperchargedMR2 any head way with the swap??

you should look into having the cables modified for your application, I had it done in one of my many phases of modification lol.

Took them buy an industrial company that does stuff for off shore oil rigging and they crimpped on the end i needed for the tranny side while keeping my stock setup for the shifter side, works like a dream and i think is better than oem quality since their work is used for industrial applications.

On another note i have found a new tranny >:D doing some mods now to get it going, i'll give you an update when I'm done with some custom work i'm trying out

Thanks, Jeff! Haven't seen you around for a long time so great to have your input! Appreciate the info so maybe I can look into ordering the shifter assembly and cables! Sure do miss your help around the Corolla forums!
