Reverse gear slipping

Hello. My son just brought his 2000 Corolla w/ 98000 miles and auto transmission home from school. In Reverse, a very slow acceleration will move the car in reverse slowly but fast Reverse acceleration just revs the engine, no movement. Forward gears seem ok. Fluid level seems ok.
Check engine is on but that might be coincidence because he doesn't know how long it has been on(!).
Is this more likely a repair or replace? I have a trusted garage who only does replacements but if I can save several hundred $$ I will try for repair. Also, are Reverse and Forward independent so that Forward gears(s) are not necessarily destined to go as well? Thanks!

Hello. Thats funny, was in that situation with my sons 00 corolla. Just try a simple drain and fill, first, see how it goes. about 3.7ts of Dex III (provided the current level is correct). Its a 10mm drian plug, not quite as tight as an oil drain bolt. I would get a washer too. Because you will need to get the washer at the dealer, may as well buy the dex there too, not that expensive.

Also consider a product called Lubegard. An additive recommended by manufacturers. Helps with slippage, roughness, etc. Your looking for "Lubegard Red".
