Smart Key system - door locking

Hi - I bought a used (16k miles) 15 XSE V6 this week and really enjoy it so far...

The color combination (with the black interior) just struck me as very appealing. I compared it with an Accord Touring V6 and an Avalon Limited. The Camry seemed to combine the things I liked about both the Accord and Avalon without some of the things I didn't care for.

So here's my question...

Does the Smart Key unlock the car when I approach, or does it wait until I touch the driver's side door?

More importantly, does the car lock itself after me and the Smart Key leave it? When I got home from work yesterday, I purposely did NOT lock it with the inside door lock button. A while later, my wife and I left in our Malibu, and I checked the Camry - and it was unlocked.

Is that the expected behavior of the system? Is there a way to set the car to lock itself when there's no longer a Smart Key present?

I guess I expected it to act more like my Corvette - which has a fully passive system. It unlocks when it detects a fob, and locks when the fob goes out of range.

Thanks!

Nice car. No, it doesn't unlock as you approach the car. It unlocks when you put your hand inside the door handle (you'll hear a beep). To lock it, just put the back of your hand against the sensor on the outside of the door handle (again, you'll hear a beep). This is how it works with my 14.5, and I doubt they've changed how it functions.

For clarification, NO, the car will not lock itself when you walk away. However, if you put your hand inside the handle to unlock the door(s), but do not pull the door open, and walk away, the car automatically locks in 1 minute. Same thing if you unlock with the fob, but don't open the door. Also, as a side note, opening the driver's door with the smart key unlocks only the driver's door. Opening the front-passenger door with the smart key unlocks all four doors.

I don't know about on the 15+ Camry, but on the 14.5 this setting can be changed so that you unlock all the doors by grabbing the driver's door handle.

The only thing that happens when you walk up to the car is the interior light will turn on. I think this is also an adjustable setting.

Congrats on the new/used car purchase ....... a very nice choice in color and engine choice!!!! ...... V6 all the way!! ..l there are a very few of us with V6, also hard to find.

The car unlocks when you touch the inner part of the handle.

When touching the front driver side handle, it'll unlock the driver side, front passenger will unlock all doors. I think if you touch the driver's side door handle again within 3 secondsof the first time, it'll unlock all doors. When walking away, it doesn't auto locks, you will have to touch the exterior lock button or the lock button inside to lock the door.

[off topic] I really really love the color of your car!!!... The Ruby Flare Pearl [your color] was my first choice, but in the model/combination I wanted ['15 XLE V6] ... my dealership had it on the show room floor with 3 km on it and I don't like show rooms cars of how all the people comes in, sit and touch it and all ... so ended up with my second choice of Blizzard Pearl [White] ... which I don't mind as all my new car purchases are white cars

Thank you all for the kind replies!

I really love this color combination, although there were some other colors that were in the running.

My car unlocks all doors when I touch the inside driver's door handle, so it must be programmable.

I've learned a few more things about the car - my wife and I took it on a long drive Saturday on the back roads of NW Illinois and southern Wisconsin, and we're both quite happy with it.

And I'm with you, c_huynh32 - V6 was the only engine I was interested in. We drove an SE with the I4 a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't generate any level of enthusiasm for it at all. In fact, the lack of V6 availability in other makes and models is what put the Camry on the list of choices. I'm sure that the I4 is a proper choice for most buyers, but not for me, and I'm glad that Toyota and Honda still offer it.

Thanks again for all your helpful replies!

Congratulations

Hi there, first of all, congratulations for your new car. Whenever we buy a new car or anything else, we discover new things about it day after day. So if you are facing any problem with your car then why don't you call the person who is an expert in it. He will explain you each and everything about the car and repair your car. Once my uncle's car door was not locking properly, so he called an expert from the safe service LA. The expert came in the meanwhile and repair the car and explain him why this thing happen.

Thank you, Andrew.
Fortunately, this is a normal and expected behavior from the car, so there's no need for me to consult with anyone else. We've really enjoyed the car - just over six months of ownership and about 12,000 miles. I think I now have pretty much figured out answers to all my initial questions about how the car operates (or I've become accustomed to them, and they no longer register as odd or strange to me!).

Push the APPS button--->Settings----->Vehicle----->Vehicle Customization-----> Door Lock Settings and adjust if the timing for the automatic locking or turn it off completely. Sounds like yours is off. Dealers will turn this off as they don't want the car to automatically lock every minute when it is in the showroom. Most will forget or won't even bother to switch the settings back to factory settings.
