Test Drove an 09 Today and it wasn't good

I was planning on trading my 05 for an 09 to take advantage of Toyota's low interest rate offer. I finally found the truck I wanted on the lot--access cab TRD Off Road--took it for a test drive, and I can't believe that Toyota let this truck out of the factory. I know that wind noise from a defective windshield has been an issue (I have it around 80mph if the wind is coming from a certain direction) but with the truck I test drove, the wind noise was loud and piercing even at 30 mph, and got increasingly louder as the mph went up. So I test drove another truck, same model but different color, and the engine tick, which on these trucks is normal up to a point, was so loud it sounded like a bomb was going to go off under the hood. Now I'm really having second thoughts. The first few months of ownership on my truck were spent with trips back and forth to the dealer to fix one problem after another. I just can't go through that again--with my job, I don't have time for weekly 40 mile trips to the dealer. I thought Toyota had finally, after 5 years with this model, fixed all of the defects, but I test drive two trucks, and they both have problems!

I share your pain! I too would like to do something with my '05 Taco, but exactly what I don't know...

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269199

On top of these issues the trim around the lower section of the windshield is causing me grief, I'm developing a small exhaust leak up front around my TSB exhaust manifolds, and it appears my engine tick is getting louder. Mobil 1 and Penzoil Platinum from the start with the Toyota OEM filter...

Sorry to hear about that. I test drove two also, and was actually shocked at how quiet it was. But I'm coming from a '99 Neon (no frames on the side windows:headbang:), so I'm used to alot of wind noise. Especially at highway speeds. The engines seemed nice and quiet on the two that I test drove, but I really wasn't listening for a tick..... That said, I've read about this issue, so am kinda expecting it once my truck comes in.

I love all the little ticks my 05 has! I love my truck, goes places that people cant believe I went (through rock slides, up hills I shouldnt be on, etc.) and it looks good. Mine has run pretty strong but I wouldnt recommend a Revtek lift due to the fact that my stock TRD bilsteins snapped well the front right side. Still havent got my Coils from TRDParts4u.com (wouldnt recommend getting anything from them if you are expecting a speedy delievery!) Personally I think everyone just complains a little too much, yes I know you paid 30,000+ dollars for your vehicle and expect it to be perfect and drive like a mercedes but its not. Its a truck and if you use it like a truck should be used its going to have problems with it, especially if you offroad it. Just my $.02 though. I would just say stick with your 05 if toyota hasnt fixed any of the problems, and since you already have had things fixed on your 05 no point of spending time/money on trips to the dealer all the time to get them fixed. Good luck!

You know... the DO make other trucks. My GMC is smooth, quiet, powerful, gets nearly 20mpg and hasn't been back to a dealer in the year I have owned it. Not a single problem.

I know GM gets slammed in here, but I've had many new GM trucks and they have been excellent vehicles. Don't believe everything you read on TN!

Just to clarify, the wind noise is a high pitched whistle, not normal wind noise. It's caused from a faulty seal around the windshield that lets a small amount of air through. It's not something anyone can live with as normal wind noise without it driving you crazy. I know it's not a luxury vehicle, but for $31000 Toyota should do some QC before they let a truck out of the factory.

unless there is something majorly wrong with yours, i don't see why you would trade it in on a new one just to take advantage of zero percent financing as well as the early years depretiation.

My 09 isn't loud, I have no vibrations at all, It doesn't bottom out with heavy loads, the paint isn't chipping, The stereo and cd's sound great, and it's not that bad on gas. I'm quite pleased here. Had a 99 f150 before this one and have to say this is a much nicer truck.

+1

I had an FJ and it had a substanial amount of wind noise. The Taco seems so much quieter. I guess it's just your point of reference.

Just picked up my '09 yesterday and didn't have any noise problem at 75 MPH.
The truck is quiet and solid as a rock.

About 5 months ago I sold my 2005 Tacoma and got a 2008. Exact same truck right down to the color.
So far I liked my 2005 better, it seemed to have a better ride and a tighter feel on the front end (steering). It is possible that my 08 will feel better to me after some more break in time but as it stands now I miss my 05.

This 08 has no wind noise issues but my 05 did have that terrible high pitched whistle. The problem is above the windshield and it was very easy to fix with some screen moulding.

A truck owner is the last person I would think to be a prissy pants.

...learn something new every day.
 My question to the OP is...Do you own your 05' outright yet? If so keep it, no need for an 09'. About the only thing that would make me get rid of my 08' is if they release a 3.4L diesel in the Taco...then it will be game over...the 08' will be gone!

If you're sold on buying a new, why not address these things with the dealer prior to purchase? Don't like the wind noise? Tell the dealer that getting that fixed is a requirement to you buying it (use this approach on anything you have an issue with). With new auto sales plumetting, I would be shocked if the dealer didn't address all of you issues prior to delivery.

Note: I have an 08 DC, and I have non of the issues you have described.

This is my 4th truck. My 77 f100 was a beast. I treated it like a beast and it took it. I had a 99 f150 work truck ran fine (coldest AC on earth) sold it to neighbor still running today. I had an 02 Dakota RC Sport. It was alright I guess transmission issues throughout warranty period and a rough ride. Traded the Dakota in on my 08 dbl cab and I don't have any complaints with it so far. :chug:

trucks new

well i just have a old 94 pickup but i love it and understand all the problems with the American models of Japanese brand cars and trucks. the japs should build the jap cars and the us should build the big three. (I hate American cars) However i have driven the FJ and the Land Cruiser and Camry for 09 and must say im very pleased. the fj had a substantally stiff ride but felt as if it were made to. the cabin and chassis felt very sure and solid. the land cruiser however felt solid but really REALLY soft and inscure. wouldnt carrie this truck off road nor did it feel confident for on road. i believe the mixed market for an off road vechicle for the street and a street vechicle for the road is rather dumb. the camry is outstanding. it handled Greatly for a large vechicle as it is and the engine (though just a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder as i drove) mantained a very peppy attitude. the brakes were the only down fault to me.

Justa saying. I love toyotas.:chug:

I had a 1999 Mazda B3000 Troy Lee Edition before I got my Tacoma. Never had any problems and sold it in 2006. Man I loved that truck. The only reason I sold it was because I had jump seats in the back and a child on the way. I researched the Tacoma and got the 2006. I thought about getting a 2009, but I have too much time (mods) invested in this one to sell it. No issues with it either, so why bother selling it? I'm keeping it until it falls apart.

That was the first thing I thought of because the high pitched whistling noise was coming from the top of the windshield directly over the driver's head, so I pulled the truck over to the side of the road to have a look. But there was no plastic covering anywhere on the truck. It was the windshield seal.

My 2008 access cab TRD OffRoadTacoma has been a great truck for the 4,000 miles I've driven it. It has a lifter tick pretty much ALL the time. I haven't put my ear on the engine to determine if my tick is the lifter or the manifolds leaking. I'm thinking lifters. Everyone bitches about the BFG tires that come stock, but oddly enough I really like them, and I get good comments on how they look all the time. I drive loud equipment everyday so maybe I'm numb to this but: I don't notice any unusually loud cab noise from wind or anything else for that matter. Take note however that my daily driver prior to this 08 was a 1997 Tacoma with no interior carpet or headliner.

When I can think of something to complain about with my 08 Tacoma, I'll let you know........still thinking....still thinking..................hmmmm...........what bothers me about my taco........hmmmmmmm............................

You want to trade in an '05 for an '09 because you want to "take advantage" of the interest rate? Somehow that doesn't make sense.
What's wrong with your '05?

duh, it's four years old. us american's deserve a new vehicle at least every 3 years. don't you think the OP has suffered enough
