Thinking of getting a new 2012 Camry

This is my first post here as I've been looking at quite a few new cars lately and have a few questions about the new Camry as I'm highly considering it.

1) What type of gas mileage are you getting out of the 4 cylinder version on average with mostly highway driving? I do 27 miles of mostly highway driving to work every day, so that's why I'm most interested in that.

2) When washing the car, have you noticed the side of the rear bumper seems weak behind the wheels and that it flexes in and out a lot?

The reason for the 2nd question is I saw a Camry on the interstate the other day and saw this section vibrating a lot, and was wondering if other owners had noticed that. Just makes me wonder where else they may have cut costs if they are willing to let that vibrate like that.

Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Mike

I've noticed the same thing on the highway. It's like the plastic cover (not the actual bumper anyway) is loose there.

I'd still recommend the new Camry to anybody looking to buy. There are some serious competitors out there but the Camry would be on my list.

I was just in the same boat as you, I pick up my new 2012 Camry SE tomorrow. I test drove the below listed cars this past week and the winner was the Camry.

Honda Accord
Hyundai Sonata
Subaru Legacy
Mazda 6

I wanted to buy a Cadillac CTS-V but the money tree was bare.

The hood on my 2010 4Runner vibrates a little at highway speeds, they are trying to keep the weight down, so they use a lighter body panel.

Zembonez is right, it might just be the cover - I very much doubt it being a problem.

Also, to put your mind at ease, this is not limited to the Camry. I've seen many Honda Accords exhibiting the same wind buffeting effect in that same area behind the wheel while at highway speeds.

1.if you can drive nice and easy you'll be satisfied with MPG: at 60-65MPH my trip comp. showing 45MPG.

2. never seen anything like that. maybe just wasn't paying attention.
or maybe plastic clip holding cover was broken or missing?

after driving 2012 camry firs time I took it off of my list.
but after trying accord, optima and sonata I still bought camry.:D
if you not worried about resale value and possible low reliability check out 2012 passat.
I love it. but resale and reliability drove me away from passat...

Yeah, and they've been on cars since the mid to late 80's, but I've never seen the japanese makes have these flopping around before. I'm used to seeing that on some Ford and GM cars, but never Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. It just makes me wonder if they are stooping to Ford and GM levels in order to make more profit. It just seems kind of cheap.

Off to the dealership to try and make a decision, but right now I'm leaning towards the Hyundai Sonata.

If possible, try and drive the Sonata SE and then drive the Camry SE, if you do this, I think you will be surprised at how nice the Camry SE is.

The Sonatas interior feels cramped and the seats were not comfortable. The Sonata feels a little confused when you drive it, the transmission is slow and it did not have that nice smooth linear feel to it like the Camry does. The Sonata is a nice car, but it felt cheap to me.

Today is the second day that I have my new Camry SE!

I agree. Just for grins and giggles I went and sat in a Sonata, and hit my head getting in the back seat, and had to squish myself to get in the front seat. Mind you, I'm 5'6" and weigh 130 lbs., I am small by most standards.

The Sonata definitely has some sexy body lines, but I think that's one of the few things it has going for it.

there is two different kinds of sexy:
Hollywood big silicon lips and boobs (sorry):),stupid artificial smile you gonna get tired of it very quick sexy -(sonata)
and beautiful curves warm smile next door girl you wanna look whole your life and not gonna get bored sexy-camry.
pick what you like.

I didn't like the way the A pillar leans right back into your normal field of vision. In most cars the A pillar is well forward enough not to block your line of sight. Big deal when you can't see that guy blasting through the stop sign and heading for your driver's door.

Take a look at the post history. Either a spam bot, or a hired viral marketer to make a new Toyota model look bad and make people have second thoughts. I see no reason to post the same thing, nearly word for word, in 75% of the posts.

If the car is really that "nose heavy" and magically the Accord felt good, then go out and buy an Accord, please.

I would also take a look at the new 2012 Kia Optima if I were you. I was looking at the newly redesigned Camry but my dealers barely had any and the few that had any didn't really want to deal at all. I was trying to decide what to do but in the end I saw a commercial for the car and I just fell in love.

I love the new Camry's interior but I just couldn't find what I wanted. And yes, I know, it's a Kia, but it has a 10 year powertrain warranty and it hasn't given me any problems so far. I decided to give a shot. It's also nice not seeing any of my own car on the road, and it also makes it easier to get a deal because by the looks of it I'm guessing they sell pretty slow :D

This is the exact same color and trim level I bought:

In my opinion the Optima's design keeps that understated look that won't get tacky in the future, unlike the Sonata. The Sonata looks nice and all but it seems like it's trying a little too hard.

The Sonata will be much harder to deal on than the Optima, and the Sonata/Optima share the EXACT same engine and powertrain. The features and differences in the design of the exterior/interior are what differentiate Optima/Sonata. If you're already considering Sonata, check the Optima sister out as well...

Keep in mind the Camry will have superior resale value BY FAR and we all know it will be reliable. Kia and Hyundai have been getting better beginning with the last gen Sonata, but they're not up to the tier of Toyota and Honda just yet.... Though I have to say that these days, cars that are just complete crap are harder to find.

A lot of people I talked to hate the dash design, but I love it. Reminds me of my dream car, the last gen Toyota Supra and also a bit of my old 7th gen corolla with the center stack angled towards the driver :D Everyone has their own taste.

I just happen to love the interior on the Optima. I'm also glad that a Kia can feel so solid inside, as when I was driving to the dealer I thought it was too good to be true to have a car that looks like that, costs less than a Camry, and doesn't feel like it's gonna fall apart haha.

As for ride quality, yes, it isn't as good, but many members have had promising results by switching out the OEM tires. The OEM tires REALLY suck for everything, sound, ride quality, handling, lol. I understand though, they're trying to sell this car several thousand under Camry and have features like dual pane panoramic sunroof and heated and cooled front seats/heated rear seats. It's not magic, and the Camry definitely rides better. It's all up to your preference. I didn't mind the ride quality. :)

The stitching on the Optima's dash sweetened the deal for me. I'm glad the 2012 Camry has it as well, it just looks so nice, even though they're both not really leather :p Our passengers don't have to know. :)

me too. I want to get a 2012 camry se v6. I have 2006 Camry LE V6. I don't care about the design. It is toyota and reliable.. My camry v6 is 242,000 miles and strong, never had a problem except blower motor ( I heard it can be fixed easy ). anyway, I heard great new about the 2012 camry v6. 1/4 mile 14.3 sec.

by the way, I don't want to trade in my car. toyota is moving forward.

Totally agree,
I'm very new to Toyotanation, I was given Sonata Se for the weekend, and i was not happy with it at all. I mean it's a nice car, but I was ready to take it back to the dealer on monday. My wife and me went for a small trip shopping and after 45 min ride I was ready to get out the car. Then I took camry for the day. I put 95 miles on it and I was satified with the car's performance and confort. Damn I left a bag of potatoes in the Sonatas trunk!
