Looking at timing chain sets (excluding VVT sprocket) for a 2002 Chevy Prizm with 220K. Wondering about quality of Cloyes v Sealed Power; not familiar with them. SP is $100 more for the kit. Toyota genuine parts seem extremely expensive so think I won't do that. Experiences with manufacturers of timing chain and related parts?

I've heard nothing but good things about the Cloyes.

Have you checked with our site vendor for Toyota parts?

It's Roman at a Toyota of Cool Springs. His shipped prices are generally the best around.

Also remember that the Toyota parts may also be expensive but they lasted 220K miles and were installed on hundreds of thousands of engines. Sometimes it's worth the premium.

I'd like as many miles as possible. I think $285 is a good investment for that type of repair. Should help keep me out of a new car payment for a while. I blew the original engine at 62K so this engine actually only has about 160. I keep forgetting that.

I've recently done a bunch of suspension and emissions work.

But to your direct question, I'm trying to do maintenance that could have expensive consequences if the items fail. Timing chain seemed like a high value target. I'm just trying to extend the life of my daily commute and errand car (as well as my primary transport; wife has the nice ride). But at that point I will have exhausted my meager knowledge of what goes on under the VC. I'm actually breaking into a sweat thinking about the timing chain job.

Maybe I should start a new thread on suggested high value preventive repairs?

Would appreciate suggestions.

As long as you run Hugh quality oil and there is no indication of failure (noise), you are good to go on a chain. Removing the valve cover and inspecting the teeth with show you if any problems are on the horizon.
