Canada may be different in regards to the laws that govern ratings and liability, and I don't know what it's manual says in regards to non Hybrids but I would never tow in US models. Australian and I believe Mexican models can but I know the Mexican models have a different P/N for the springs and I think shocks, not sure on Aussie models. People will say you can and they have without issue. Ignoring the extra wear on suspension parts and the transmission, the potential legal problem is that the car is not rated by the manufacturer to tow anything; I would not want to risk getting in serious hot water as a result of being in an accident while towing since it told you in print the car is not rated to tow anything and you were towing, just like it's not worth it to tow over the rated capacity of a pickup for the same reasons even if it can physically do it.

yes its true, but the Chief mechanic form my toyota dealer at mtl told me there is no problem to tow 1000 lbs, second dealer at boucherville said 2000lbs...without problem with my warranty, and manual said not tow at all...they said the manual is wrong, bad translation from hybrid model...i put a hitch or not? im confused.

Who cares what some ignorant dealers say? They aren't talking about THEIR OWN investments; they're talking about yours. Do you honestly think they care what happens to you car after you leave their lot? Follow what it says in the manual. Do NOT tow anything with you Camry unless you want to take an unneeded risk. Either buy yourself a truck or rent something to move whatever you need.

Do you really want to to 1000ibs with ur sedan? Say goodbye to your rear struts, and possibly a couple tire blowouts too if they aren't rated for the gross weight that the car will be dealing with. Get yourself a cheap truck for that stuff and save your car. If/when you want to sell your car and you say "I towed 1000ibs easily with it" people will be sure to go elsewhere for a car.

If the manual says no, that is what is printed. Keep in mind what they'll say now and what they will say or put in writing if you damage the vehicle towing (may or may not happen, I'd be worried about struts/springs/bushings) or have an accident may be different.

The bad translation thing is unlikely unless you mean English to French given you are in Canada, in which case someone in Canada would need to check their English manual to verify what it says.

ok,i will contact toyota canada and explain this situation.i d ont want to tow 1000 lbs, only bicycle rack for 2 bikes(sportrack) and mini trailer (reese transporter 750)if its really not possible i will buy a bike rack for my roof...if the camry can support it...thanks for your help.

Though I wouldn't do it, I parked next to a Gen 7 the other day with a trailer hitch on it. Looked like a Hidden Hitch brand.

There IS a fuse panel location (10A) marked Towing.

These transmissions are taking a crap just with normal usage and now people want to strap something to the back of it and haul.

Not to mention the weight of the camry is 4300lbs which is crazy on its own right. And only having a 4cyl power this car.

My Cadillac DTS weighed the same and it came with a V8

The same Camry in Australia is rated to tow 500 kg (1100 lbs) without trailer brakes and 1200 kg (2640 lbs) with trailer brakes. I think the lawyers have a big say in trailer ratings.
In the manual for the US Camry it advises against towing or even installing a hitch for a bicycle rack. Somehow the US version cannot handle the weight of two bikes hanging off the back.

To avoid warranty issues, I would wait until the powertrain warranty expires before installing a hitch.

I've seen a number of small sedans with hitch bike racks. If you have light bikes, no more than two, and two people in the car I doubt there would be a problem.

If your taking the whole family, 4 bikes and trunk full of luggage, I'd pass. Get an SUV.

Truth be told, if Toyota has not published a GCWR, then you effectively can't tow anything.

Get into an accident that wasn't your fault and you can get charged for not abiding by the weight limitations of the vehicle. This includes staying with front and rear gross axle weight rating, gross vehicle weight rating, and gross combined weight rating (towing).

If the manual states 1,000lb tow rating, the manual should specify both a GCWR, and state conditions. Such conditions will specify 1000lbs with a 150lb driver, or 700lbs towing with three 150lb people in the vehicle, or another combination within that 1150lb range.

Hitch weight is another thing to consider.

It was stated earlier - your rear suspension will take the biggest hit when towing with a unibody sedan.

Also, towing puts much strain on your transmission and adds heat. Driving in a lower gear will increase cooling, but it's best to install a trans cooler for maximum longevity.

Since the Camry is designed to carry 5 adults and their luggage, towing 1000lbs isn't going to hurt it anymore than loading the car up with your friends for a weekend vacation. 5 adults + luggage can easily surpass 1000lbs. The Camry has a 1000lb payload capacity, as well as a 1000lb tow capacity (However, if you are towing 1000lbs, you can't have any payload, and vise versa). Keep in mind that if you add weight to one, you have to subtract from the other. IE, if you have 500lbs of people and cargo, you can only tow 500lbs according to Toyota.

Towing 1000lbs vs having a 1000lb payload is actually better for the car in regards to wear on the tires and suspension due to the majority of the weight being upheld by the trailer and only 100lbs on the tongue, which is like having a couple large bags of dog food in the trunk. Has your suspension ever collapse from putting 2 bags of dog food in your trunk? In regards to the brakes, engine, and transmission, both will have equal wear on those parts since the 1000lbs is the same to those components no matter where the weight is located.

I find it surprising that a mechanic would say that a car designed to carry 5 adults + luggage, which could easily surpass 1000lbs, doesn't have the power to tow 1000lbs. 1000lbs is 1000lbs.

This is according to Toyota regarding the 2012 Camry (NON) hybrid models. It DOES have a tow rating of 1000lbs however Toyota does not recommend towing anything. We have added hitches for bicycles and such at our dealer but I cant recall anyone needing to haul more than that.

The hardest thing about towing other than the weight, is wind resistance. A trailer and its contents that have a lot of drag can require quite a bit more power to pull, especially against a head wind. Besides the additional power and increased heat, the extra load can mess with the transmission shifting. The transmission can get quite hot in slow stop and go summer traffic.

I was Googling for some torque specs yesterday and came upon a Camry/Camry Hybrid Toyota sheet that had all kinds of things on it. Near the bottom there was a line that said Towing Weight. Both vehicles had N/A in their box. Whether that means "Not Available" or "Not Applicable" I don't know. But Toyota did NOT spec it.

The transmission needs a cooler if you plan on towing. The transmission needs regular ATF fluid changes to avoid taking a crap.

The Camry/Avalon should have no problem towing light loads, like ANY car. Liability is on you and not the automaker if you do something stupidly wrong or break something. Since society, in general, is regressing to chronic stupidity levels, automakers don't want the liability. .

Pictures attached are why there are load/weight limits and recommendations againt towing.
