Transmission jerks hard when going into Reverse and partly when going into Drive

I posted this in the 1st and 2nd gen forum but given that we all use the same auto tranny I figured I'd post this here too.

Yes, I have looked extensively and can't find an answer.

I have been working on this for quite a while. The transmission has no problems whatsoever out of the fact that when I put it into Reverse it jerks really hard and makes a noise. It also does it when going into Drive but it's not as bad. The axles are both brand new Oreilly axles. The mounts are as of a now completely new. I have adjusted the kickdown cable and that doesn't help. As I already said, the transmission has NO other problems. It shifts great, doesn't slip, changes all gears fast and smooth and exhibits nothing else. It would appear there is too much play somewhere where the axles meet the transmission or I would hate it to be the transmission itself, it's like maybe the splines are bad. Looking over the diagrams at toyotapartszone I can't really tell what it could be. Whatever the axles go onto(they attach something using hex bolts), maybe it's that or maybe it's whatever that piece that goes into the transmission could be the culprit. When I put it into drive and let it idle it has a clunking as if there is too much play too, like it's rattling wherever it is that it has too much play. When I put it into neutral the rattling goes away. This engine is in complete perfect shape and almost everything under the hood is either new or completely cleaned out. I have this car in perfect shape.

Anyone have any ideas ?

It could definitely be something going out in the differential. If it makes a clank at idle somethings grenading inside. Any shavings inside tranny or differential?

Jack car up, with engine off put in park and see how much play you get. Its probably not the parking paw that's chewed up but its worth a shot.....

sounds like a diff/tranny issue. Have u had a tranny flush done lately? If so, then it might be a result of that, if not, then it might be best to get one done (although it may be too late). Mine had a similar symptom where the car wouldnt coast that great in [D]rive, but in [N]eutral it would coast like no tomorrow. I ended up doing a tranny flush, and it fixed it up; no more resistance is the gearbox, all smooth.

Also double check ALL the mounts.

Does the jerk from Drive to reverse happen even when your foot is HARD on the brakes?

Has your transmission been rebuilt?

I have a similar problem: tranny jerks when switching D to R. Also, I get a bit of a jerk between gear changes - it is difficult to notice, but it's there. Do you have that also?

I haven't found a solution, but my problems started a couple of months after I had my tranny rebuilt. Another issue - the garage that did the rebuild grossly overfilled the transmission for some reason, and it seems like they did it on purpose (they checked the ATF level when I went back to them and didn't say anything about the high ATF level). I plan to drain the excess ATF and see if that helps.

I'm assuming all your fluid levels are spot on, judging from your post?

If anyone knows what the problem might be, please do share.

EDIT: from my observation, the problem in my car is caused from excessive engine movement (my mounts are brand new, so can't be that). Did you check whether the jerking in your car is cause my excessive engine movement, or is it coming from transaxle itself?
