Not exactly. I think you are missing the differences I'm trying to point out.
Correct - I learned a lot today ...

but that doesn't mean it isn't a Double DIN. It's just not the standard Double DIN size. Toyota Double DIN radios are not the same size as the industry standard Double DIN radio you will buy from Pioneer or JVC. It's designed to fit in Toyota model dashboards.
This just grates against my engineering background.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_7736

Double-Din by definition is 180x100mm and Single-Din by definition is 180x50mm - although the page above lists D-DIN in USA as 7x4 inches as opposed to 7.09 x 3.94 which the mm spec converts to.

There is no such thing as Toyota D-DIN that is not standard D-DIN - but there would be large format squarish Toyota radios and small-format rectangular Toyota radios.

Most Double DIN radios that you buy from larger companies will have a "Toyota" surround in the box to fit around their radio in Toyota models with the standard opening. I know my Kenwood came with one and I just tossed it since it didn't work for me.
I don't think what you are talking about is a "Toyota" surround. Most mainstream radios include a "trim bezel" It's somewhat unusual in that it would almost never be used. The main purpose is it makes the radio look good when it is installed in a sound board - it also looks okay with SOME kits, but most kits have their own trim bezel and most cars that shipped with standard D-DIN or DIN radios don't need or have space for the trim bezel.

This is not what I am trying to pointing out. I am saying that some Toyotas have a roughly single DIN sized radios and/or openings and some have roughly double DIN sized radios and/or openings. With the double DIN sized radios specifically, the Toyota radio is wider and taller than the standard double DIN sized radio. This makes it so that you cannot easily swap a Toyota flat face rectangle radio from a roughly double DIN sized opening to a 2003-2008 Corolla with a curved face rectangle radio and roughly double DIN sized radio openings.

The Chinese radios that are made for Toyota models as direct bolt in (usually list Corolla, Camry, Prado, Hilux, and Crown as models for the swap; Manufactured by Eonon, Erisin, etc.) will be the larger size when compared to say a Pioneer. As an example, my OEM Toyota NAV receiver on my 2005 Sequoia (standard Toyota size) is approximately 8" wide. My Pioneer DPX500BT installed in my 2005 Corolla (standard double DIN size) is 6 7/8 inches wide. If a Chinese radio is supposed to install in a Toyota hole and be direct bolt in, it should also be around 8" wide.

With that said, there are Toyota cars that have single DIN sized radios. These cars either will not accept a Double DIN radio in the factory radio spot or simply had a roughly single DIN sized radio installed from the factory. Examples include:

1990 Corolla (notice how you would not be able to swap in a Double Din radio in the factory radio opening):

1992 Celica (notice how it came with a single DIN radio in a double DIN spot. You could swap a double DIN radio in this spot or swap in another single DIN with a kit.):

There are also Toyotas with roughly double DIN sized radio openings. These either had a roughly single DIN radio installed with storage below (like the Celica above) or have a roughly double DIN Toyota sized radio. If they are the latter, they will accept industry standard double DIN radios with a kit to fill in the side gaps or will accept a single DIN sized radio if there is a kit to fill in the gap and the sides. Examples include:

2003 Corolla (curved face):

2005 4Runner (flat face; notice how it is recessed in the dash opening):

2009 Sienna (flat face; notice how it is recessed in the dash opening):

All I was trying to point out is that Toyota radios are larger than standard double DIN and the 2003-2008 Corolla has a curved dash. With those two things in mind, trying to swap a Toyota sized radio in a 2003-2008 Corolla dash will result in you having to grind down an install kit or face plate. Since the areas behind this would be hollow, you would have massive holes on the sides and bottom of the radio where you ground away the filler areas. This all assumes that the Chinese radio in question is Toyota sized not standard double DIN. I assumed it was Toyota sized based on the description and pictures showing it is a direct bolt in with no kit required.

Attention, Toyota owners

Kenwood includes a set of Toyota trim pieces that'll make this receiver look great in your dash.

I assumed that most of these would have them since Kenwood felt the need to have it. It may only be Kenwood that does it.

^you only need that Toyota trim piece for some Toyotas, with the double DIN kit for the Corolla mine fit perfectly.
Exactly. It is made for "standard" flat faced Toyota radios like Sienna, Matrix, and 4Runner. Like you I didn't need it and threw it away. This is because the Corolla has a formed dash design.

Okay - what we need to clarify to summarize this:

Apparently, there are three types of Chinese radio size/formats:

I stand corrected and I follow Car A/V pretty carefully and have never seen that before. I don't think anyone other than Kenwood does it and I don't think Kenwood does it on most of their models ...

In addition to that you could find the overseas trim panel. Part number 55406-02100-B0 is dark gray.
