What do you do (regularly and often) to save gas?

Pretty self-explanatory; what do you do regularly to save gas? I know of the things you can do (light foot, roll up windows, use A/C less often ect.) but I'm curious if there's anyone here who actually try to incorperate these tips as often as possible.

Car: You should already know by now (99' Camry LE 4-cyl)
Average Gas Mileage: 25 (mostly city)

For me, I take advantage of the tachometer by trying to see how low I can keep the RPMs. For example, I can get as high as 25 miles per gallon in the city just by keeping the RPMs below 1500. In first gear I cannot help but to get to 2000 or even 2500 depending on terrain (up hills or at a red light that turned green), but after that I can get to a comfortable speed and just coast after that.

By all means, I try not to use the cruise control. While cruise control is meant to keep you at speed, I like using just enough gas to keep the speed around the speed limit while also trying not to downshift.

I shut off the engine whenever I'm at the bank waiting in line to do our family banking errands (drive-up).

Without doing these things, we've managed to get only 17-21 miles per gallon in the city.

I bought a scangauge from linear-logic.com and I love it. It tells me what's my miles per gallon at any given time and also records gallon per tank, hour, day, trip, ect. Lots of good info to help me adjust my driving. On long trips on the freeway, if I cruise at 40MPH with cruise control on in my 05 Corolla S, I get a little over 41MPG. My acceleration break-down is like this

1st 3-7MPG
2nd 11-15MPG
3rd 17-25
4th 25+

On average, I pull about 35MPG including when I get a little acceleration happy. Most of my day is a two-way 90 mile commute each, so gas milage is pretty important to me. Good tips is to coast to a red light as far back as you can, especially if no one is behind you. You're going over 150MPG when you're coasting at above 50MPH to a stop. Accelerate smoothly and when you need it. You lose the most gas on acceleration and braking.

cruise in higher gears and don't run out the engine. be gentle. i dont know. i could care less about saving gas. its something you need so it doesn matter the price. another thing you can try is to walk or ride a bike. maybe use a city bus.no driving would be a great way to save gas. just sit at your house and dont do anything.

'99 Ford F-150 4x4; regular cab, 8' bed
Average MPG: 15.5 (mix of city and country backroad driving)
I try to be smooth with the throttle and I coast when I can.
I try to not speed. Speeding really hurts your gas milage and it doesnt save you as much time as you might think.
I run my tire pressure a little bit higher than suggested (Ford wants me to run 35 psi, I run 40 in the front and 35 in the rear, when Im hauling I put 50 psi in the rear).
I keep the air filter clean. I have a K&N and every 15,000 miles I rinse it off and re-oil it. The K&N gained me 1 mpg.
I try to not use the a/c unless its really hot/humid.
I drive with the windows up when Im going faster than 40 mph.
In the winter, I dont use 4x4 unless I absolutely have to.
I try to avoid making "special" trips. I do all my shopping on the same day to limit special trips. Where I shop is 12 miles away from where I live, so those short trips can add up.

Not much. It's been 90+ these past few days so I'm turning the AC on. But if it's not too hot, I won't use the AC and if it's not too cold during the winter, I won't use as much heat.

What I'll do is make one long trip out for errands and shopping rather than go out multiple times a week. It saves gas and mileage on my car.

I was looking for something like that. Is there anything else out there that's similar and would connect to a 1993 Geo Prizm LSi?

anyone see the mythbusters about running ac or with windows down? windows down won by 15 miles over ac. and the heater has nothing to do with mpg. it uses the hot coolant and an electric fan across the heater core. nothing connected to the crank like the ac. i'd say use the cruise unless you're in an area with lots of hills. the computer should do a better job of holding one speed.

Yea.... I saw that one too. I would rather be basquing in my AC than dying of heat stroke just to save $.50.

Peter.... what the hell are you talking about. I don't understand a word that you type.

Predict how the trafic will flow and when the lights change is some of the best you can do. I try to change the speed as little as possible, have the right tire pressure and keep the speed above the speed limit most of the time so I don't block traffic.

I also use a special technique when driving over hills which gives great fuel economy.

And I'm sure you all would do the same if your fuel costed $4.30/gal.

acetone baby! :whatwhat:
also, i use cruise control and feather foot
i can manage around 20-21 w/ my v6
on the highway i can usually pull 25-26
i managed 30 once, but that was with wind at the back both ways

It's not my discovery. I got it from some program in television where they interviewed a guy who had won an eco rally or something like that.

You accelerate when going downhill (acceleration is very cheap then) and use this extra momentum to get uphill right after without giving much gas until you end with the same speed as before the downhill section.

I can see the improvement in mpg on the board computer (standard equipment in all Toyotas here :) ), so it works for me - although it does sound wild fetched at first.

It is not completely legal because of the speed limits - but when gas prices are that high, I'll take the risk!

f**k saving gas. drive how you want to drive. we still has the cheapest gas prices in the world
i think i'll coin and new phrase to respond to you:).

You're being GM about it. (you know...how GM was betting that they would keep selling their trucks..but since gas prices are up and a couple of other factors...no one's buy Suv's anymore.)

What? I'm saving gas right now...i'm bored at home...ie no driving.

lol....okay to give a more usefull response:

try to get a gas card or a credit card that gives you up to 5 percent rebates when you buy gas, i think AAA has such a card i'm not sure of others. Then use the card only for gas.

Why try to beat it? adjust to it.
