I had my oil changed today at the stealership...

I wanted to know what you guys are using...what I'm looking for is best filter to filter out gunks and best oil for fuel economy and engine protection...

And since I'm there, I've picked up 2 Toyota oil filters...but thinking about going back to Purolator BOSS oil filter in the future...

Quite a few ppl swears Pennzoil Platinum is excellent oil, but I'm also thinking about Eneos and Mobile-1...

Just to give you an idea on how much I drive...

I can put up to 800 miles in a 7 day week, quite a bit of freeway speeds, but a lot of stop-n-go... especially in LA traffic...

So sound-off guys!

There is no wrong answers here!😆

Toyota oem filter
p/n #90915-YZZN1; 90915YZZF2

Mobil 1 0w-20 / 0w-16

They make 0w-16 as well but sometimes it's not easiest to find when needed

I know the Toyota filter and oil aren’t bad. I’ve always used Mobil 1. And so that means their filter, the M1-103A, and the only 0W-16 oil they have which is the advanced fuel economy.

Ultimately there’s little to no difference between any of the oils or filters from any of the reputable brands. I just say get 0w-16 instead of 20. It’s what the engine was made for. Unless you have the 1.8 in which case, I have no idea what it takes.

Just a curiosity, why do y’all use the Toyota filter instead of like a Fram or Mobil 1 that can be found much easier at like a Walmart or a parts store?

To me it just seems like an unnecessary inconvenience to go to the dealer to get a filter. Guess you could order it online.

I actually bought the Toyota filter at Walmart in US. The other OEM-grade filter is Denso branded one.

I steer clear of FRAM based on experience and filter analysis. Lots of good info is available on BITOG on both filters and oil alike...

These discussions can go on forever. The main thing is to make sure you change your oil and filter within the specified interval - I prefer 5000 mi / 6 months, especially with the high compression, direct injection M20A-FKS, but you are driving a lot so I would get your oil analyzed and see what the results are and stick to that combo.

Quality oil:
Toyota Genuine Motor Oil - this is manufactured by ExxonMobil with a specially formulated additive pack
Mobil1 Extended Protection
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum
Valvoline Extended Protection
Quaker State Ultimate Durability
SuperTech (Wolf's Head, Cam2 - all made by Warren)
If you want to keep your engine as clean as possible - Redline or Amsoil SS as these oils have high ester content.
Any name brand really.

Quality filters:
WIX (Mann&Hummel owns WIX and Purolator and there are differences in these filters depending on where they are made)
Toyota (made by Denso)
Fram Ultra (People bash the orange cans because of the paper endcaps, but if you change it out every 6 mo, it definitely will not fail)

Again, any name brand really. Most filters in the world are made by a handful of manufacturers. WIX/Mann&Hummel/Purolator, Champ Labs, or Fram.

I should point out that most people get their oil changed at local shops or lube joints. A lot of the time, these places use bulk oil in a 55 gallon drum and Chinese made filters and people don't see any issues as long as they change their oil within the specified interval.

What I prefer, TGMO, Mobil1 EP, QSUD, or Amsoil SS and I am a WIX guy, but the Toyota filter is a good default - silicone ADBV, filtering capacity and bypass spring setting specified and tested by Toyota, etc.

Filters that are rated for 10k/12 mo ('extended drain interval') and are rated for synthetic oil more likely than not have a ADBV that is silicone and not nitrile as the latter become brittle with time.

Cut opens show both black and orange ABDV's on different model number Toyota filters and black doesn't necessarily mean nitrile. If the user is sticking to 6 mo, there is really no need to worry about this potential failure point.

- Toyota 90915-YZZG2 - orange silicone ADBV
- Toyota 90915-YZZD3 - black silicone ADBV
Toyota 90915-10009 cut open 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback - Toyota 90915-10009 - orange silicone ADBV

Can't find a cut-open of the YZZF2/N2, but they have been superseded by 90915YZZN1.

They don't for the simple fact that nowhere does Toyota (Denso) claim these filters have this desirable feature.
If they did have it we would see it stated loud and clear.

Hatchback here. I bought my OEM filters from the dealership parts counter. $5 each, cheaper than the 3rd party parts stores. While I was there I bought oil for $7/quart. Normally, the big box store everyone loves to hate sells Mobil 1 0w-16 for $24/5qt but they were sold out. Changed oil at 1K. Changing oil+filter at 5k and every 5k thereafter. I live in a hot climate and want this thing to last.

Dealers like Toyota will use bulk oil for service department. Likely any oil I've purchased from Honda is by the quart (1ltr ~ bottle) I suspect it's a way to maximize profit margins and make people sway towards using the dealer for oil changes instead of DIY

Edit: I shouldn't speculate but in the 5 years I bought my oem oil from Honda it was always single quart bottles.

I stock up on whatever I get on sale of good quality oil. Have stock for 4 Changes.

Filters. Air, oil and cabin have always been Fram.
Started as best filter brand and always available at Canadian Tire when I was a young buck and stuck with them ever since.

For the Avalon I got 3 Fram Ultra Synthetic in stock also on sale and I'm going to be a rebel in my own way like the "who needs winter tires when A/S good enough in slush and snow" rebels and swap it only every 2nd oil change. And I bet the media will still look great. I'm already going to be throwing out perfectly good synthetic oil (well actually my friend has one of those oil furnaces and heats the shop with oil changes so he gets mine to burn too) for the little mileage I do so screw the 6 months "intense service" interval recommendation. I'm going one year or 5000 miles. And do not see doing 5K miles a year in the next couple years. Drain the filter (maybe) through the casing plug and that's all she wrote till the next oil change. Oil color will be a very good tell tale sign if it's not a good idea and I'll simply change interval.

Actually, I would NOT be surprised if the JDM cars still have the alternating oil filter change interval (every 2nd oil change, change the oil filter) that you have adopted.

Agree w/ your belief and assessment, esp since the modern cars all seem to have 12mo/10k mile OCI when synthetic used, and probably as long as a quality filter is being used too.

@gpsman did quite a lot of used oil analysis for a prolonged period on a Ford Escape hybrid and saw he could go to CRAZY long OCI, 25k miles! He paid for the more comprehensive UOI that looked at some component in the sample, to make the determination. You can read about it here:

First... I bought my last car in Thousand Oaks and live down in San Diego County... From Thousand Oaks to the In-N-Out in Compton, I was getting 82 miles per gallon on my Prius. That thing just absolutely rocks when it's bad traffic...

I buy everything OEM now. Everything, transmission fluid included. The only things I will not buy OEM are engine oil (Kirkland/Costco), brake fluid (Pennzoil) and blinker wiper washer fluid. OEM is usually cheaper than if I were to buy generic at a store. Case in point are the Denso spark plugs. Under $8 at the parts website and almost $10 at O'Reilly. Now, there are occasions where I have bought things on Amazon that have come out pretty darn good, price wise. If you buy multiple items, I really, really, really encourage you to check this place out...

Parts.toyota.com

When you set your store, add in the zip code of 88055... Look for a dealership whose name sounds like Lenovo.

No sales tax, usually free shipping over $75 in product and you get some of the best prices in the country. If you need stuff quick, look around at a few dealerships in the area. They do vary greatly. San Diego Norm Reeves Toyota has great prices, the next dealership on the list charges easily 20% more for the same things.

Kirkland 0-20 and Toyota OEM filters & DRAIN PLUG GASKET!

Even with the recent price increase, pushing the price per quart to around $3, it is still the best price out there for oil. Project Farm (YouTube channel) has put Warren Distribution oil up against Mobil 1 and it came out pretty darn good.

Seems like I'm posting it for the fifth time today, I buy my stuff at parts.toyota.com using the zip code of 88055. Some of the best prices in the western region and no sales tax in California. If anything, use them as a price gauge to find a dealership near you.

I went to get my oil changed and they did not have the 16 w oil, I was told by the person there that you really need to be careful with the oil. Toyota has a patent on their oil and the 20w oil will not work. IF you change your oil, be sure it is the 16 w as if your engine blows up, Toyota may say you are responsible for the bill as you did not use the recommended oil. I ended up going to the dealership to get the oil change and was told basically the same thing. Be careful when going somewhere else and be sure they use the correct oil. If they do not have it, don't second guess and have them put in any other oil but the 16 w - many places may not want to change your oil as they do not want to be responsible for the engine repair.

Unfortunately the manual even states using 0w20 when 16 is unavailable... just mentions if done then use 16 the following oil change.

I'm not sure what shops or dealers are giving this information away?
