Won't start and gassy odor

I have a 1990 Camry, 4 cyl, automatic. It has 235,000 miles. When I tried to start it today, it cranks and starts for about a second and then dies/stalls. I also notice a strong gas smell when I try to start. In order to prevent it from dying, I have to keep my foot on the gas pedal. As soon as I let off the gas, it dies. All the electronic stuff (radio, dash lights, etc stay on, but the engine itself will not stay running unless I keep gas pedal depressed.) Any ideas of what could be causing this? Within the last 6 months I have replaced the following:

1. battery
2. timing belt
3. water pump
4. alternator and power steering serpentine belts (drive/accessory belts)
5. CV axle shafts and outer tie rod end (I have a feeling that this is unrelated to my problem. :p)

Anyways, I had it towed to a nearby shop so I'm have to wait until he opens up again either tomorrow or Tuesday if he's closed for Veteran's Day. In the meantime I thought I would post this here to see if I could get some ideas from you guys. I'd really appreciate your input. I've owned this car for over 2 years now and it hasn't ever had any problems until today. I've driven it from Seattle to Phoenix, Phoenix to Seattle, and just recently, Seattle to Miami, all without any issues whatsover. I've been getting the oil changed about one every 3,000 miles also.

The idle is more "rough" when the AC is on. Would that be related to the IAC? Also, every once in a while if the AC is on and I'm sitting at idle, if I give gas but then suddenly let go before it kicks into gear, it stumbles and stalls. But I've always been able to start up again immediately.

Rough running with the AC on is a different issue and is easily solved. That's for later...

Has the air filter been replace recently? Or rather, has the AFM (the Air Flow Meter, the metal thing on top of the air box) been unplugged? If that is done incorrectly (NEVER remove the screws, there is a small metal clip to hold the harness in place), it can damage internal components in the AFM and cause the problem you are describing.
