1MZ-FE in a RAV4?

Can I install a 1MZ-FE engine in a 1997 Toyota RAV4? Will it hook up to my exsisting gear box? :hammer: It has a 3SFE 2.0 Engine, a 5 speed gear box, 4 door, 2WD vehicle.

How close is the 3SFE to the 5SFE? If a 1MZ can be mated to a 5SFE tranny, and a 5SFE can be mated to a 3SFE tranny, then it should go, no? Or maybe use the 3VZ or 5VZ with a 5 speed out of a truck? I don't know, just throwing out ideas. Wait, is the 2WD RAV4 FWD? If so, why not just get a tranny with the 1MZ? Figuring out the axles might be easier than fitting the engine to a different tranny.

3SFE-5SFE - same engine family. 5SFE is the newer engine, and has bigger displacement (2.2L vs 2.0 in 3SFE)

IIRC, 1MZ and 5SFE trannys are different (A141 on 1MZ and A140 on 5SFE autos) so if the RAV4 did have a 1MZ dropped in it, you'd have to buy a v6 tranny to go with it. As for whether or not that tranny fits, depends on the following: RAV4 is on a shared platform/frame (think Camry/ES/Sienna/Highlander/Avalon), but I don't remember if its off the Corolla or off the Camry. If off the Corolla, there will be one helluva fitment issue. If it's off the Camry, it should drop in, unless its one of the AWD RAV4's then its a whole different issue.

why the hell wouldn't you do a 3S-GTE??? Wouldn't 1MZ be heavy as hell and f*ck up your handling real bad?
The 1mz-fe and 3s-gte+turbo/etc. are almost exactly the same weight. Aluminum open deck (1MZ) vs. iron closed deck (3s-gte).

the older cam with 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE, what tranny did they use?? and the older 2nd gen used 2VZ-FE with manual tranny...would those mount on the 3VZ-FE since they're considered the same engine family.?

it's possible, but i'd find out the hp tolerance on those trannies (A140s can't handle more than 200+hp). I tried finding the site that had all the models/transmission codes but I can't, so I can't answer your first question. Maybe somebody else can.

Well guys, doing some research on the RAV4/V6 issue. I've come to the conclusion if a V6 can be stuffed in a MR2 [making it a MR6] I think it can be done in a RAV4. But the best engine would be the V6 engine that came in the Camry since it is basically the same front frame. Why? Because the Camry and the RAV4 both used the 3SFE engine. Also, the 5SFE engine is not that much different. Now, which Camry V6 engine and in which year would that be? Regarding the gear box. I use the E250 since my 97' RAV4 is 2WD. Can anyone give me some more information regarding the gearbox and the V6 engine. Will my E250 work, or will I have to also install the Camry gearbox?

Hmmm.....If the 3SGTE fits in the RAV4 and the 1MZ can be squeezed into an MR2, I guess it MIGHT be possible to fit the 1MZ in the RAV 4. Using an aluminum block motor would help with the weight issue. You would need take some measurements though. You need to find out if the engine bay is big enoug to accomodate the transversly mounted engine. That includes any off set needed to mate up to the transaxle and room needed for accessories. I would look into the MR2 1MZ swaps for motor mount and transmission solutions.

I already have, regarding the weight of the 3SGTe and the 1MZ. The 1MZ is lighter then the 3SGTE because of the aluminum heads and block. around 300 lighter. This dude on this forum told me that even the gearbox would fit, but I'd have to reenforce the engine mounts as long as I use the V6 from a Camry. Does anyone have a picture of the V6 that came in the Camry?

despite the weight difference between the 3sgte and the 1mzfe, you're still better off dropping in the 3sgte, since your original engine was the 3sfe

with the 3sgte, you won't need to make custom mounts, which in themselves will run you a couple grand for good ones to make the 1mz fit properly in your engine bay
and since you already have the 5spd, it should mate up with very little or no modification and at least handle the stock boost on the 3sgte

Wow! What kind of labor rates do you pay? I did my own layout for the custom motor mounts for my 1JZ swap. I took the cardboard templates to a local weld shop and had them make them. Total cost: $40.

^ don't talk to me about it

talk to those who have had to go through hell getting their 3sgte to fit into an engine bay made for the 1mz/5sfe.....it only reasons that it will be just as difficult or as much work the other way around

otherwise, we'd all have done 3sgte swaps instead of everybody just talking about it
