2013 Highlander - Replace Display Audio

Spent 8-10 hours getting an aftermarket radio installed in my HL this weekend. The biggest snag was related to the Axxess ASWC, which has some weak installation instructions (for a 2012 HL) and doesn't work with the Bluetooth Phone buttons on the steering wheel. I need to do some more troubleshooting, probably next weekend to try and get at least one BT phone button working (According to Kenwood, 'call pickup' is the only BT-related function their HUs support via the wired remote port).

The majority of the wiring was accomplished with harnesses provided by Crutchfield, but it's essential to know which wires are associated with the backup camera and steering wheel controls if you want either to function (2013 harness/colors are different).

E38 = 28 pin harness
E39 = 16 pin harness

Once you've made the voltage converter (https://www.toyotanation.com/forum/...ion-2003-2009/355342-how-using-factory-rear-view-camera-aftermarket-stereo.html) for the factory backup camera, you'll connect it as follows:

RCA Cable center wire (positive) -> E39 pin 8 (red)
RCA Cable sheilding wire (negative) -> E39 pin 15 (white)

7806 Voltage Converter Input 12v -> E38 pin 2 (red) - also splice Reverse wire from H/U (see below)
7806 Voltage Converter Ground -> H/U ground
7806 Voltage Converter Output 6v -> E39 pin 7 (black)

Other wires not associated with Crutchfield Harness:
Reverse wire from H/U -> E38 pin 2 (red) - also splice 7806 Voltage Converter Input 12v (see above)
Parking Brake Sensor from H/U -> connect to H/U ground

The Axxess install seems straight forward, and would be, had there been a special note to ground the factory harness E38 (it doesn't get connected to anything, so it needs a ground from your radio harness):

Axxess Brown -> Kenwood Blue/Yellow
Axxess Green/Orange -> E38 pin 21 (beige)
Axxess Black/Green -> E38 pin 22 (violet)
E38 pin 23 (black) -> connect to H/U ground

The Sirius/XM and Nav antennas were mounted (magnetic) to the top of the 3.5" Multi-Information Display, which seems to be working fine.

I was having SiriusXM reception issues with the antenna on top of the Multi-Information Display, so I bought some zink plated steel at lowes, and built this:

Dimensions are 3.5" x 1 1/4"

I used zip ties to hold it to the plastic framework above the ducting:

Also needed is an AM/FM antenna adapter, which Crutchfield includes when you purchase a H/U (not currently displayed for 2013 HL, so you may need to call them to get it added to your order):

Back of the factory H/U (E38 & E39 are on the top row, next to one another:


Kenwood DNX6990 mounted in factory bracket (note side gaps):


Fabricated some plastic strips from part of the legacy kit that Crutchfield included with my purchase, and hot glued them

to the lip on the side of the Kenwood DNX6990 (see last photo):


Removed factory micorphone, and hot glued Kenwood in it's place:


Overhead console with Kenwood mic fitted (note factory mic hot glued to bracket to keep it in place):


Passenger handle removed to route mic wire into trim (handle removal may not be necessary):


If you remove the handle, use a pair of needle-nose to help get them back on the brackets:


There's now way to get around a rats nest like this. Use lots of zip ties:


Tools that I couldn't have done without. The first time I'd really used a hot glue gun, and it worked great; the Pro-Fit

tool was great at prying plastic parts apart without destroying them:


Tools that made the job easier, specifically the Vise-Grip wire stripper (just bought it), and the Panavise, which is like

an extra set of hands:

I can't take all of the credit for making this happen. Jared, another TN member helped tremendously with the pin-out info for E38 & E39 and Axxess, as well as the antenna adapter and satellite antenna install location. The backup camera voltage converter and AUX/USB both came from Tacoma Forums (I think).

Quick question, I don't have the pin-out for the 2013 radio otherwise i'd look it up:

What happened to the antenna sockets? There used to be 2 (for the diversity antenna). That socket on the far right looks like it has 2 large pins in it, is that the new antenna socket???

Yeah, was a crazy couple of days. I had to split the install up into 3 sessions, then got hung up on the Axxess; I didn't ground the harness, and spent all kinds of time late last night trying to figure it out. The answer was in an FJ Cruiser thread, where someone had done the same thing! I was in my garage until 1:45am, then got back out there by 9am this morning to get the mic fished through the headliner.

Yes, the AM/FM antenna is the far right rectangular socket. The adapter only uses one of the pins, and includes a wire that you connect to the aftermarket H/U antenna.

I should also note that the manufacture plugged in the Satellite antenna (dark gray socket), even though the radio is not Satellite or Nav capable...

Would also encourage everyone to give soldered connections a try. Check YouTube for tutorials, and give it a shot. I was pretty shaky when I made the voltage converter last week, but after all the practice on Saturday connecting the Kenwood harness to the adapter harnesses on my workbench, I was hardly concerned about soldering the E38 & E39 connections inside the car. Suggest you use a towel or something to protect the console, and just be mindful of the hot tip.

One more thing - I fabricated the plastic filler pieces as a temporary solution. I'm hoping someone will offer a kit in the next few months for a real clean look. If anyone is curious, I used my Dremel to rough cut the pieces, then put the 'faces' of the 2 pieces together and ground them on my belt sander (http://www.mickleyknives.com/html/no_weld_grinder.html). The heat from the sanding welded the edges, so they were identical up until I snapped them apart. The hot glue holds great, and with enough pressure they snap right off. One was a bit messy, so I had to re-do.

when you used the AXXESS harness, i am assuming you only used the ASWC, and not the AX-TOY28SWC with the AXXESS ASWC? The TOY28SWC only uses the black box out of the ASWC package, and replaces the harness with a different one....

i'm installing (tomorrow) the Pioneer AVH-P1400DVD in my 2013 Highlander. Replacing the factory base piece of crap... i'll also be installing the pioneer XM tuner GEX-P920XM. I am only waiting for the transistor and heat sink to be delivered tomorrow, then i should have all of my harnesses to retain the factory back up cam and steering wheel controls. my new h/u has a USB port so i guess i'll just disable the one in the highlander.

when you used the AXXESS harness, i am assuming you only used the ASWC, and not the AX-TOY28SWC with the AXXESS ASWC? The TOY28SWC only uses the black box out of the ASWC package, and replaces the harness with a different one....
Correct, I didn't use the AX-TOY28SWC

my new h/u has a USB port so i guess i'll just disable the one in the highlander.

I finished my installation, but i have one problem: my backup cam comes on when i put my car in reverse, but then when i finish backing up and put it in drive, it goes to a black screen and stays that way. If i touch the screen to remove the black screen, it will stay on the home screen for a few seconds, then revert back to the black screen again... I've checked all my connections multiple times, and can find nothing wrong. Wonder what's going on with it? so, i have had to turn the camera off for now....but, i really need it work. Anyone have any ideas? the H/U is a Pioneer AVH-P1400DVD, installing it in a 2013 Highlander (non-JBL)... Thanks!

Big Thanks for this DIY!! It was very helpful for my DNX690HD install to my 2013 AWD. I used a different steering wheel adapter, same issue where phone call buttons do not come through, but no biggie. I used similair face plate method, USB/audio mod, XM radio zinc plate technique, all worked great.
As a side note: One issue I had that I finally solved was pairing my IPhone 5 with this Kenwood. Looks like an unsolved issue on many websites including Kenwood's. On initial setup of radio turn bluetooth OFF under OEM settings. Once you into the regular bluetooth setup it works. If you do not do this the phone and radio battle against each other on pairing schemes, let Apple win.

Glad it worked out for you. The firmware was out of date when I got my DNX6690, so you may want to look into that. Kenwood offers the files, and PDF instructions on their website.

About 3-4 weeks ago, I stared to get more reception problems on the country roads that I frequent near my home. It seems as though the leaves and the recent spell of inclement weather are problematic for my XM receiver, and by extension, the position of my antenna (no problems with highway driving). The issue has grown to the point that my 5 year old said to me just yesterday, "The songs not over yet, it's just skipping".

I've been thinking of ways to get the antenna on the roof, but they all seem difficult or unsightly. The windshield is mounted flush, and doesn't have a gasket to hide the wire. Drilling a hole next to the roof rail mount seems excessive...

Maybe just mount it inside in the corner on top of the dash? I'm surprised the plastic dash is killing the signal. Unless the windshield has something built in, I know some tint has metallic products, but front windshield no tint. I'll check my sat reception vs terrestrial reception signal, my old xm receiver has that function, not sure if kenwood does.

I updated firmware first thing, Bluetooth was a no go until I turned bluetooth off in oem setup, I think it's only an iPhone 5 issue

It's not the dash, but the foliage on the trees. Most of the roads where I live are lined with trees that nearly block all sunlight. On overcast/rainy days, I'd have to switch to USB, as XM was unlistenable. However, on the open road, I don't have any issues. My old Sirius Sportster NEVER cut out, unless I was in a garage (roof mounted antenna).

Its working where I have it now.
Ill double check, but I dont think the sat reciever is on the roof as per your pic on my 2013 base AWD model. I was on roof installing my rails and dont recall it. I did unplug a sat cable from the stock radio, maybe they hide it somewhere else. Ill look for curiosity, but for now no reason to switch even if it has it. Sounds like Steve had no issue other than trees anyway. Ill post pic of roof to confirm later.

Oh well, works where I have it under dash.
Yep, I specifically wanted base model so I can add the particular add-ons I want without paying the insano price upgrades the dealer tries to steal from you. Just to get navigation I would have had to pay $3K or more, ridiculous. I payed $29,300 for a base AWD and installed Kenwood NAV, roof rack, hitch, etc for a fraction of dealer and better quality, especially radio.
Anyway, I'm off topic clearly, love toyota's but hate how they try to suck money out for the extras.

I've never had any reception problems on the Tundra or Highlander Xm antenna beyond the normal touchless car wash booth.

Here is the all new 2014 Highlander and guess what same location for the Xm antenna as used on the 2nd gen. This is a optimal location for placement as it provides a good view of the sky.

Not sure why some of you even the se owner doesn't have this but the black tab on the roof is xm

Sat radio is included for 3 mos from Toyota headunit is preinstalled with xm and this is very odd because every highlander I've seen in my area including base have a sat antenna . I'm thinking this is very likely a regional option now but I've never seen a 2011 up new front end highlander without the sat antenna .

I find it very hard to believe your se model doesn't have it being its slotted between a base and limited . I know my 2011 has the tech package but every highlander at our Dealership had the Xm antenna on the roof. I saw the base the other day 2012 with No roof rack on the lot with the antenna so I find it odd some of you don't have it.

The antenna is standard i've never seen one without it on the 11-13 so this is odd. Se model's navigation or not should have this as standard hell even the base model has it without a roof rack. This is a very interesting topic tho but you are aware that Toyota provided xm On Non Navigation Highlanders from 2011-13 . The 2013 has entune but Toyota also provided a Non Navi touch screen 2013 Model too on the highlander.

The 2013 entune crap is all new and on its last leg on this model . The changes Toyota made on a smaller head unit was
Pretty bad but I was unaware they gotten cheaper and omitted certain options too. I don't care for Toyota radios as well and it's first item I ripped out on my tundra. From what I know is all navigation and mid level tech audio packages have xm the other cheaper head units don't. This mainly applies to 2013 models only so yea it appears Toyota got cheaper again which isn't surprising knowing how things have operated lately .

The good thing your the only 2013 model who took better measures on replacing it and yes u can add the factory xm antenna on that location and run the wiring to your head unit I've done that install on my friends Tacoma that's why I know about that xm topic from researching it out a wile back.

Ah yes still very weird it's on certain trims levels on the 2013 and 2011,2012 have it.
Entune was new for the 2013 model it appears certain options that were included before no longer are. Toyota is weird in the way they package this crap im glad I purchased mine with it back in 2011.

I've never cared for the way Toyota surcharges on features like the poster mentioned he is correct on all accounts.
