The click indicates that it's on properly.

 

My '17 Camry LE has done exactly the same thing as yours since I bought it four months ago. I believe the gas cap behavior you mentioned is normal--sure feels weird, though.

I have never seen a CHECK ENGINE indicator on the dash, which you normally would if the cap was not secured properly. Doesn't hurt to ask about it next time you're at the dealer.

I just pruchased the same year camry LE and the cap is still tight when I remove it to pump in gas.

 

I have the 2013 and I recall the cap being snug. Someone stole my wife's gas cap recently, so she replaced it with a locking cap. I bought the same one and plan on using that for the Camry. With the direction the world seems to be heading towards, I think a locking cap may be a valuable commodity in the near future.

 

wELL IF YOU DONT TRUST THE LOCKING gAS cAP dOOR THEN I WOULD SAY YOU HAVE A PROBLEM BECASUE IF THEY WANT THE GAS BAD ENOUGH THEY PUNCH A HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF YOUR GAS TANK AND DRAIN IT OUT. now your in a bigger problem a hole in the tank. .

 

I had a few aftermarket locking caps and they leaked ater a while at the large O ring inside the cap , so if you decide to buy one get an OEM . it is a shame that some can get that desperate to steal the gas, years ago you could leave the keys in your car and no one stole the car , the gas caps didnt need O rings . the only thing constant in life is change. .

Depends on where you live. Certain people have asked about leaving their smart key in their brand new car just shows the difference between lifestyles.

 

I have 2017 Camry LE with the factory gas cap. One click after gas up, never a check engine light. It doesn't seem "loose" just barely "snug" when removing it to put gas in. The cap isn't meant to go on "tight" as if wrenched on, just enough.
