The vast majority of Toyota transmissions are pretty reliable. There are a few exceptions- like the shutter problem with early 7th Generation Camrys... but both automatic transmissions used on Gen 5 Camrys are pretty solid as long as no one has abused the car and basic maintenance has been followed. Even a Camry of that era that hasn't been properly maintained would likely have a more reliable transmission that most other midsize cars in the industry from that period.
Gen 5 transmissions can fail (no car is perfect), but it's extremely rare considering just how many Camrys Toyota sold back then. Just have a trusted independent mechanic give any car that you are seriously considering an inspection and you should be fine regarding the transmission.
i have 2005 with 5 speed auto. 214,000 miles and transmission shifts smooth. Funny thing is original owner changed transmission fluid at 34,000 miles and after that never changed it. I changed it when i bought the car at 200k miles
