Hi all. been reading a lot here. 2 days ago I bought an 87 camry automatic. I drove it home on the freeway the first problem: - upon acceleration at about 50 mph- shaking and vibrating all over the place (the camry). Got it home put it in reverse- NO REVERSE. trans fluid is dirty,I bought fluid and filter gonna drain it and refill first (as I've learned here ). NOTE: the trunk latch/lock is taken out and the guy who sold it to me told me it got broken into. Wondering if there's a relay, electrical issue or interruption that could also be part of shifting the transmission? idk. its a longshot but wow IDK S*** about this Toyota. So Humbled I am.

About me...Im a girl. blue eyed blonde in So Cal.
What I've been through lately (automotively speaking)...

I own a '63 chevy c-10 p/u which had the original inline 230 v6- it took me ten years to build it. all by myself--original column shift, stock everything. last year it got stolen in Pauma Valley where it was tarped and parked. Some asshole -stole it, chopped it up and sold it...trailer attatched. After 6 months of combing the reservation I FOUND IT Deep in Valley Center CA. I found the trailer on another reservation entirely. The truck transmission was torn out , windows broken out nothing works--gutted and spray painted. I had to buy it back from the guy who bought it stolen?? go figure. That took me 6 more months. anyway... its gonna take ten more years to get it back to driveable again let alone original. my baby. my life -tears :crying:

More recently...On July 5th 2015, I drove my running 1998 528i BMW to a mechanic that started working on my scooter that broke down the week prior. I drove up and I told him I was going into a smog check station for a test and I asked him was there any advice he could give me for my car before I drove it thru..-- He said just a few things my car needed to ensure a fine tuned easy pass. it was only supposed to take two days and I was starting a new job in L.A. the next week. He gave me a parts list totalling 100.$ I paid him that day and another 100$ for labor- in cash. Four days later he said he needed another $180. then $50 . Then another $50, then $30. Then a week later he told me someone came to his shop and stole my key. He assured me he retrieved the key safely and the key had not been tampered with. I reminded him that was the only key and about the chip inside - not to open it. He shushed me on the subject and that was that! For the next 4 weeks I was riding my bike or skateboarding or thumbing it over to his place every 3 days trying to see my car. He said there was a problem...he had not been able to start my BMW at all. he said he replaced all the parts and bought plugs and it still wont start. I said "THE KEY!!" He said, "No! its NOT the key. Nothing happened with the key! I assure you! its something else! Now let me work on it, I can fix it. Leave me alone now and dont bother me" He told me it needed a 250$ part and he bought a similar part at the junk yard...which wasnt the problem after all--another $150. I asked him about the scooter , was it fixed... could I drive it? He said no. He asked me to leave my BMW shop manual with him and I did. I asked him to let me help to try to fix it , to start it. but HE WOULD NOT LET ME EVEN LOOK AT IT. He refused to let me even see the key or open the hood up. Then he said the problem is that its the car's computer that has to be replaced--but again the problem was not in the computer either. Then after that he said the key had to be re-flashed at the dealership for $60. I snuck around to get a look at my car after hours and there was cobwebs on the tire- not a good sign... and the back seat was pulled out, windows were down etc. I couldnt stall my employer any longer about starting my new job. I called the mechanic stating I would be picking up my car before Monday. I asked him please over the weekend just button it up and put all of the old parts in the car and have the receipts please. Over the weekend I got a tow rope and showed up on Monday and asked for my key. He thru a hissy fit temper tantrum. I looked at my car it was torn up and a mess. I hooked up my car to a friends jeep and began to pull it up the hill. Then my key fell apart in the column...guess what---it had been opened and inside NO CHIP:facepalm: i jumped out and skated down to his place to have words with the mechanic but he had already driven off. I towed my car as far as I could on the rope and then my car sat in the VON'S parking lot for a whole week. The fuel pump was torn out and gasoline was all over the back seat and in my hair for me trying to put it back together. parts were torn out everywhere. I got a hold of BMW Motorsports who told me that they had the equipment to re set the key for $130.00 if I towed the car into their shop. I AAA my car with Leucadia towing (thank goodness for them!). Two days later Oceanside Motorsports said it will be $1000.00 to put my car back together BEFORE they could even attempt to re-set the key. A THOUSAND DOLLARS to fix it ?? and to the way it was before that mechanic touched it? That mechanic KEPT ME FROM SEEING MY CAR FOR NEARLY 2 WHOLE MONTHS. The BMW technicians at Motorsports explained exactly what they had to do, had to fix and why...yes it would be a thousand dollar job BEFORE the key could be re-set. And as for the scooter and my BMW shop manual being returned to me, he said if I came near his place that he would call the cops. I called the junk yard to come get the BMW. I junked it and Im not looking back. Auf Wiedersehen BMW RIP

SO!!! now that brings me to HERE Toyotanation! ...with the $400 I got from junking my BMW I bought a 1987 camry OMG---ive never worked on a Toyota so please help me PLEEEEESE and Thank you! I am broke as a joke:help: No playtoy...seriously please

What does the car do when you shift it in reverse? I.E. weird noises vs nothing in particular? Read this:

Slipping fwd clutch will cause no forward movement until revved up.
Fused forward clutch will cause drive in neutral and no reverse.
No reverse with no engine braking in low indicates bad low/reverse brake.
The op should repeat the test to confirm no engine braking.
If low and reverse brake fails the whole tranny must be torn apart to fix.
The shaking at 50 mph could be anything but don't underestimate the stupid stuff like unbalanced wheels, flat spots on the tires, that kind of things. Does the steering shake?

Also I understand your car is an '87 so 4 cyl but it would be cool to know the trim (LE, DX, base...). Does it have an ECT button?

Wow, what an ordeal. Good luck with the Camry. I always roll around with my Sector 9 ready for backup, but my cars never leave me stranded. After working for 6 hours in the wind today I had to go hang ten around the lake to unwind.

It is unbelievable what happens at some shops, I pay more at the dealer just to have trained techs work on my Honda and Toyota. But I do 90% of the work so its mostly for technical things like an alignment.

There's two tranny oil compartments. The transmission and the transaxle. Here's a write up of the transaxle oil change.

For the transmission and filter oil you can drain the tranny pan oil with a 10mmhex key if it isn't seized. I stripped the drain plug on mine, had to slowly loosen the pan bolts to drain the oil out from the edge of the pan. You might want to get a new pan gasket if you are going to remove the pan to replace the filter.

Good Luck, lots of members on this forum with great advice.

THANKU U ALL SOOOO MUCH! ok... in NEUTRAL it drives. In REVERSE it does nothing but rev. if I want to roll the car in neutral (or any gear )I have to shut engine off and then I can push it.
what does : fused forward clutch mean ??? There IS low gear and an ECT button (both working) and OD button I dont know what engine braking means...yet.

Holy **** you been through a lot. Sorry you had to go through all that BS. Some mechanics out there are shady as crap...karma will get him back....

I would think the neutral safety switch is out of alignment. Check that. It is located near the battery on the transmission.

I'm also wondering about the NSS. Symptoms include like what you're suggesting (moving forward in neutral, no reverse or drive), and stuff like the key not coming out of the ignition in park, car not starting in park or neutral and other weird mismatches between indicator position on the shifter and column. Setting procedure is not hard, just takes patience to get right. Only adjust the cable first, don't touch the actual NSS as that is apparently much more difficult.

like the key not coming out of the ignition in park
Good point here - also, make sure you use the black button right above the key to remove it from the ignition cylinder. The key is probably so worn it will just come out, but it helps to make sure you have it fully in the 'off' position and use the button.

Thanks all again! Couldn't even address the NSS yet ...for the head came off of two trans pan bolts yesterday. Today I went and spent 20+$ on bolts and bits to machine out or reverse the snapped shafts- which werent really a problem for me... they came right out. The problem...Yet again IS LETTING ANYONE TOUCH MY CAR. I dont care if its a 500$ 87 camry...its MY CAR. But how much of my voice bitching at full volume does it take to get a "just-trying-to-help" dude out from underneath it?! IDK ? The only thing a girl can do politely is wait for him to give up and usually thats when it gets dark. Well now its dark. Now all my bits are broken off in the bolt holes and i have to bore them out myself with no one to uh hold the flashlight. Grrrrrrr. wait it gets even funnier: His answer tonight about my car is..." ure just gonna have to fix it in the morning" then he goes to hop on his motorcycle and theres a huge crack down the center of it so he cant drive it. So i say, "looks like youre just gonna have to park it and order parts tomorrow , when its daylight I guess huh?" He threw a fit, " You dont understand! I cant just fix it tomorrow! Im calling AAA". ...well how could he say that's good enuf for me to do about my car...but for him - it doesnt apply????

Too bad I missed this thread:)
before tearing into the transmission make sure the shift cable jacket is secured to the transmission housing bracket and clip. If there is no clip the cable will be all over the place; the drive will be in neutral and the car will make loud clanking in park.
