My 94 Camry LE has power locks that automatically locks the doors when the engine is started. How can I disable this feature? I have had to use the spare key twice to get back into the car after I got locked out with the engine running.

the camry i just bought doesn't do that. its a 99le. it doesn't have an alarm system.
my other camry does that. its a 98le. it has the factory alarm system.

so ^^^he might be right......... i really wanted auto lock doors on my new camry so i came up with the idea that it MIGHT have been the alarm system on the old car that did that. (also when i turn off my car, the old car auto unlocks itself too !)

It HAS to have an aftermarket alarm. It's not a stock feature on gen 3 or 4 camrys. After I installed my aftermarket system on my gen 3, I had it set to do this. You'll have to figure out the make and model of the system on the alarm ECU. That's usually installed on the under side of the dash or under the seat. Then you'd cross reference the model number on the manufacturer's website to get a user manual/installation guide. Read through it, and follow the steps to disable it. :)

So you're saying if the engine is on and you close the door it locks?

Obviously this is too much work but with a little logic you could detect certain things that only occur when the car is in motion and/or latch a signal to set the alarm. Perhaps something as harmless as the drivers side seat belt being latched. Some AND logic coupled to the ignition??? Although it'd take some thinking and effort to make this happen. :ugh3:

Most car alarm systems have this feature. Mine would lock the doors after the car was started and had the option to unlock them after the car was turned off too. It would only lock the doors when all of them were shut. My system was a remote start/keyless system though.

The car has a sticker on the windshield that says "Security Alarm Shop".

The locks lock as soon as I switch the key to ign mode. This is the position right before start. There could have very well been an alarm system installed but I don't have a remote.

I looked under the dash and seats but do not see an alarm module.

If you have the Securikey+ alarm, you can turn the auto lock with ignition key function off. I have the instructions in a word document , I am looking for a PDF file I also have I can post.

My is a 99 LE with the Port added security feature at the Houston port when it came here.;)

When I read that your sticker said "Security Alarm Shop" I had to look at your location cause that's a local shop here in Hawaii. Why not stop by? I think it was cheap, something like $30 or $40 to get a new remote for my relative's Sentra which she bought used, which had an alarm installed from there.

I think for my Viper alarm they had to hook up whatever DEI computer tool thing to turn the auto locking/unlocking feature on or off. I got my alarm installed at Security & Sounds on Beretania and had to go back to have the feature turned off.

BTW, your doors lock even if one is open? I had a keyless entry + starter kill installed on the gen 3.5 years ago and the ignition controlled locking feature will lock then immediately unlock if it sees that a door is open. Granted, the door pin switches have to be in working order or it won't know the door is open -- I had to spray them w/ WD40 cause they were getting sticky.

91 Boz-If your remote is the three button with a green button and says ELVAT6b on the back, it is probably the Securikey+ system. Here is a cut and paste of how to turn off the autolock ignition function:
PROGRAMMING THE SELECTABLE FEATURES
The SECURIKEY+ system offers a number of selectable features that can be
changed, allowing you to custom fit the system to your customer. The
following is a list of the features that are selectable and can be changed
using the valet switch and any transmitter that is programmed to the system
installed in the vehicle.

To change the selection of any of these features, follow the step by step
programming procedures, and do not allow more then 15 seconds to pass
between any two steps or the system will terminate the programming mode.
There is no need to complete the entire programming sequence. After the
appropriate features have been changed, simply turn the ignition key off to
terminate the programming mode.
Be sure that the SECURIKEY+ system is disarmed, and the lighted valet switch
is in the off (out) position before you begin.

Security Alarm Shop is a local stereo/alarm shop and they don't do the dealer installed Securikey system..which BTW, I didn't really care for. My friend's '99 Corolla had it.

Thanks for all the replies!

Thanks Dave but I don't have the remote. I will check out "Security Alarm Shop" as island boy stated and see if a remote is available.

This morning I started the car and guess what? The doors do not lock. I don't think I did anything different but now I can turn the key and the doors do not lock.

I did get a master key yesterday ($35.00 at the local dealer) and used it to get the trunk out of the valet mode. I also reconnected the trunk linkage that I had disabled so I could use the trunk release. Those are the only things that was done since yesterday.

So you now have a Valet key which you didn't have before?

Camry's do have this option and I'm not sure but perhaps the ignition switch can tell the diiference between the keys? Q? Do you have two different keys for the car and they both work? 2 keys, as in the last detent near the shank is different but it works on the drivers door, ignition but not the trunk or passenger door?

Did the shop make you a new key based upon the Passenger key cylinder? And this new key, works magic in the trunk when your old key worked the ignition but you couldnt lock the trunk?

Curious. . . .

What I got from the dealer is a master key. This key will open trunk and the compartment in the dash. Originally I only had the valet key and it would not open the trunk. Funny thing is I used this valet key to lock the trunk in the valet position, horizontal, but could not get it back to vertical and I could not open the trunk.

Tried the valet key this morning and the locks do not lock automatically. I don't know why but I like it as it is now. Sure wish I knew why it is working like it is.
