Driving with EXTREMELY low oil

I checked my oil when my trip odometer was at 2975... It had a good level, but was getting dark. I planned to changed it at 4000. I checked my oil today at 3456, seriously, a funny number, but real... Engine had been off for a couple hours, parked on level ground. Pulled out dipstick, wiped away oil. Inserted, waited 5 seconds, removed and checked. Didnt see any oil. wiped with white shirt, very, very faint residue. There was clearly no/very little oil in the engine. I stupidly decided that i should try checking with the engine on... i now realize this was dumb because if there is any oil at all, it is going to be thrown around, and read extremely high, hence the reason you wipe the stick before checking. I opened the cap on the valve cover and could see oil spirting with every engine stroke. I figured this was normal and relaxed. It then occured to me that it may be spirting because oil is being pumped, and takes a bit to settle back to the pump, hence it is low. I added a quart, and it is clearly visible on the dipstick.
With such a low level, i am surprised that the engine hadnt seized yet... I somewhat abuse the car, at least every other day i hit 107mph(speed governor is set at). I use engine braking whenever possible. In my effort to find the maximum speed i can be at for each gear, i ran the rpms just slightly in the red, litterally, assuming the gauge reacts quick, it was only about 50rpm in the red...
Is there some reason why all my oil dissapeared? I havent noticed any oil spots where i park, but will now be keeping a close eye on it...
I was doing a variety of basic maintenance and diagnostic procedures which included attaching a vacuum gauge, and it read perfect, a steady 20in/hg. Decreased under hard acceleration, increased under deceleration, held steady with slow increase in engine speed.
Thoughts on what happened, how much damage i did to the engine?
Edit:Oil light never came on, i am still getting 42MPG, exhaust smells "normal"(a little lean, but i know the engine runs lean, and its normal for it) Has been running fine. Occasionally i lose power, abruptly, and short-lived, I sometimes have to downshift to maintain speed up a moderate hill. (Fuel levels are fine, and this happened even before the oil issue(IE before 2975, the last known good point))

It's very common for the engines on these corolla's to consume/burn oil. You were probably only 1 qt down which means there was still about 3 qts in the oil pan. Just keep monitoring it and don't rev so hard because that causes more oil to be burned.

Thanks for your quick reply, it makes sense now, that if each quart adds a little more on the dipstick, it ill be back at the 'good' level after only another quart, two if it is like a funnel, or reverse two liter, the first sip consumes a few CM the rest only a few MM.
Thinking back, my insane driving habits have probably started after the last time i checked it. I started drinking again after that, and even the slightest sip of alcohol makes me want to drive fast.
Engine braking is because my brakes are bad, and i dont want to change them right now. also i love to piss people off because they dont realize how i can stop so fast without using my brakes... lol. I always make sure there is a safe distance to any followers, or if not, i use hand signals, but its fun.

I'll bet it will take 3 to 3.5 Quarts to get to full! I don't even think it's a linear measurement, meaning the sump is not a simple cylinder.

Mine burns much more oil when I sustain high speeds for a long distance than it does at lower rpms.

Sorry I replied now, I didn't read the last part. I'll be staying out of Raytown, Missouri, thanks for the heads up!

If you cut your oil changes back down to 3000miles it will help your oil burning.

Thanks, I'll try that. Right now I have about 1000 miles on the current change and it still is at full, but being a courier that drives 40,000 miles a year, I know it will be using oil at the rate of 1 quart every 700 miles when I have more miles on the oil change.

Don't keep adding oil, just leave it to find its level. When all is said and done the roads will be safer.
