hey all, so instead of going with the se bumper and fog lights... i found a used wonderous body kit, unpainted... (100 bucks) (sold my se bumper cover and fog lights here...)

pretty beat up... lots of sanding and fiber glass repair was necessary...

(side skirts are a little warped, so right now they are strapped to some wood, trying to straighten it out... lol ... )

checked out a few body shops... paint, lowest estimate i got was for 500, and the guy didn't look to trustworthy...

so i said f'it, i'm gonna paint it myself... went out bought a paint gun all the stuff i need etc... (already have an air compressor) everything else including paint cost me about 250... so far... 350 spent all together including the kit..... i still need to get some mesh for the front and a final sand and buff is necessary...

pain in the a... but i enjoyed the experience... as it turns out, not the greatest paint job in the world, but when moving... cant see it right?:smokin::clap:

so here are some picts of the finished product... (didn't think to take any pictures of the process, but if anyone wants to try some painting themselves, ill answer any question yall might have...)

yes i agree the front is very ricey... but it makes me laugh... but for a hundred bucks... can't complain...

and yes the pain is not blended or matched, i simply got the factory 1c8 paint... (regardless, adding flex material to paint will make it darker, and on a light car it will show, thus i said f'it, don't need to blend... you all know what i'm talking about, even on new/newer cars, the bumpers look a slightly different color... lol...)

p.s. crappy cell phone picts (makes the paint job look nicer...:naughty:)

let me know what you all think?

the front is DEFINITELY ricey... but honestly...every time i see it i laugh... can't help it, it's just funny to me... but then again so does the knight rider light...

i like the rear and the sides a lot... kind of gives it the vip look... from the rear, it looks mercedes ish.... i think the spoiler adds a nice little touch... very subtle... (unlike the front)... lol....

the front... screams rice!! ha ha ha... doesn't help that i'm asian either...

also, the front doesn't look so big with the side skirts on it... but when i did my dry fitting of the side skirts... it was warped, so it wasn't going to install right... so i left it off for now... like i said, strapped to some wood.... i do wish the front was A LOT more subtle... and kind of stuck with the rest of the body kit look, but alas....

but for me it was more about learning to paint, and have a little project... so far this has only taken me two saturdays... and i figure, maybe a couple more weekends to get the whole thing done... 1 more saturday for the final sanding and buffing... and 1 saturday to install the side skirts whenever they get straight...

but yeah, maybe i'm trying to relive my younger teenage years... never had a rice rocket.. ha ha ha....

I am not a fan of that huge front air ram either but, hey, you explained well that you liked the project and learned something. Bravo for trying something new. So, why not. Just finish it up the way you planned it, put the grille inserts in and take a pic from another angle. I think the fact that you took the pic from front and low makes it look even bigger.
Put some really wide wheels on, camber them and it comes more together. Just have fun with it the way you had it until now...and if it turns out you really don't like it at the end, you can always take it off again.

PS: I am not proud of the guys above simply barfing and bashing on somebody's work and your honesty and willingness to share it with us. You guys need to be more tolerant!
PS2: I rather read such posts and ideas than reading likes aka explaining rims spec, HID installation, AC discussions, same suspensions questions etc etc

I don't think anyone was trying to make you proud. Nobody bashed on his work, just his choice of the kit.

I stated my opinion, it wasn't a personal attack. Lighten up. If you don't like reading other people's opinions, don't.

You need to be more tolerant. Your horse is a little bit too high. After all, the OP stated:

That's the nastiest looking body kit that I've ever seen for a Camry and actually takes AWAY from the cars performance and function. Personally, I don't see an upside.

Props to the OP for the DIY though. Doing something else would have been better.

ha ha ha ... lol....

thanks tobeit, for the positive comments... yeah the photo was taken low and infront, and makes the front look ridiculously huge.... but frankly... it is ridiculously huge... ha ha ha ha....

as for the rest of the comments....
you guys are all too funny... lol... i needed a good laugh this morning...

first, i appreciate all the comments/images good and bad... people are entitled to their opinions... i'm grown enough (a year shy from being 30) that i'm gonna do what i want to do, regardless of what people say or think... frankly i don't give a flying F, they don't have to drive in it, i do... lol...

as for trd vvti, yes those are lights in the grille, i wired up the knight rider light that i got off of ebay... that shite makes me laugh every time i see it...ha ha ha ha ha..... and not every mod one does adds performance or function... you yourself are guilty of that... changing your emblems does not add performance or change the function of it... what it does is makes your car more unique... something that YOU YOURSELF appreciate... is there really a reason to have a trd gas cap, and or trd wheel hubs? does it add a function or have a benefit, other than pure aesthetics, and who determines what is aesthetically pleasing? it is a matter of opinion....

i posted this up for a reason... IMO there is more to modding your cars then just lowering it, and slapping some rims on it...

I don't think people should be stifled and or be bashed on because they have different tastes... you should do what you want, some might like it, some might not... the important thing here is to think out of the box, think for yourself, and create something that you can and will enjoy...

from what i can tell, it seems that people mod their cars to be unique, to represent a part of themselves... but frankly, every time i see someone post up picts of their car, it is a carbon copy of every other camry that i see out there... lowered, tinted, rims...

i think it's ridiculous when people ask what rims they should get or what mods they should do to their car... have a mind of your own... do some research, and YOU YOURSELF should figure out what you want to do to your car... or what accessories to purchase...

as for my car... i'm not trying to be cool or hard or any of that... i wanted to learn how to paint properly, and i thought it was funny and that is enough of a reason for me...and considering it is the first time i'm painting, i'd rather paint a cheap body kit, then some retarded expensive clip on... because if i do decide to go down that road later on, i won't f it up by doint a shitty paint job, since it won't be the first time i'm spraying something... i adhere to the old school thinking... if you wanna fix up your car, start by buying a wrench... if it doesn't work quite right the first time, redo it, until it does... i'm not a certified mechanic... but one can learn...

and please no flame war, thats just an act of futility... if one wants to have words with me, we should do it in person... lol...

anyways, i look forward to seeing some of you at the next meet, and ill post more picts of it when i get done... (and i'm sure even the people who don't like this body kit, will open this thread up to see it... lol...)

(on a side note, the kit was painted in my back yard, in a tent, great cheap way to create a clean room... go buy a cheap tent somewhere, make sure it is family size, and your good to go... becareful of lights and such inside though....)

is this your daily driver? cause it almost seems like you had spare money and a spare car, and your just having fun modding and learning from this car...

i might be wrong, but if that's the case then mod to your hearts content. project cars or suppose to be fun. but if it's your daily driver lolz... just gotta watch for those glares from people =P

#18 ·
it is and it isn't a daily driver... fortunately i get to pick what i want to drive in the mornings... i have a 99 camry, suv, and large van.... prefer not driving the suv (4x4) or the big van because of the cost of gasoline...

i have fun learning and modding in general... and if i do get glares from people all i have to do it flash my knight rider light, and push my super pursuit mode buttom... ha ha ha ha.....

#20 ·
thanx... i still need to do a final sand and polish, and hopefully it will get glossier... but if you see it up close and in person, you can definitely see the mistakes... there are some parts that i nicked the paint during the installation... i didn't wait long enough for the paint to harden, but i was running out of day light... but considering the paint on the car to begin with is pretty weatherd, (6 year old car) it will be fine...

i'm gonna go with the mesh for now, and see what that looks like... but like i said, ill post picts and so forth...

James, you did a great job if you did that all by yourself

As for people's comments. Don't take it too seriously James. There will be people that disagree with your mods, but try not to take it seriously. People make their comments and life moves on. No need to get butthurt, esp towards trd vvti. People aren't bashing. They're just stating their comments. Some might be more flowery or blunt than others lol.

Damn, how did you do all that by urself? Are you carbody savvy? Even for a simple lipkit, I was too scared to put it on myself lol. Looks like you saved a bunch of money though. Great job!

#24 ·
thanks for the comment... trust me my feelings were not hurt...
if i was that sensitive about what people thought, i would have never put the knight rider light on my car... lol...
i just wanted to let people know where i'm coming from, and what you can do if you are willing to put the effort in... as far as body work, engine work, using tools, modifying engine, or pretty much anything that moves or mechanical? i've worked on it...
my father used to be a certified mechanic, and he is one of those "why hire someone to do what you can do, you have two hands!" kind of guys... and so i've done everything from engine replacements, to fender pulling, welding, motor work, etc etc etc... i remember one time after a minor accident, i had bent my radiator core support in, and instead of taking it to the body shop, i wrapped a chain around it, attached it to a van, threw my car in reverse, and burned tires and dragged the van untill the bar was straight... (or at least straight enough for my hood latch to work.. lol...)

but if you're willing to put the time in and learn from your mistakes you can accomplish all kinds of things! (i know that sounds a little selfhelpish/inspirational, but it is true...)

the guys with the "lowered, tinted, rims..." are the norm in this forum. but out in the real world, modded gen5/6 camrys are friggin rare. even in big cites (s.f. and l.a.), i've still got stares at gas stations and whatnot from all sorts of "modded" cars.

kudos to your work. that's pretty clean for a diy. but i'm surprised no one asked- any plans for the side skirts? or lack therof?

#26 ·
thanks... yeah i can just image the types of stares i'm gona get, it's gonna be hilarious... especially with my little 17 inch rims and a modest tein-s drop... lol...

as for the side skirts, i do have them, they are painted and ready to go on, but unfortuneatly they are a little warped, so they are strapped to some long to 2x4s and i'm trying to straight them out... if that works, then it will go on, just taking my time, trying to make sure i get it right, or close to right... ha ha ha h.....

i like the rear and i been thinking of getting it, and the sideskirts of the kit, but i do not like the front end..i'd get the SET spats or the Vizage lip. which i will probably do in the future. but if you like it...good job!

#27 ·
i read that thread where you talked about that, but when you see it in person, i don't know if the spats will work with the rest of the kit, or the visage lip, i'v seen it in person, because on the rear and side skirts, there is a pretty substantial lip that sticks out all along the bottom that is matched to the font... if it doesn't have that i dont' know how it will look...

#29 ·
i can definitely do that for you, unfortunately, i leave for work when the sun is rising, and get home after dark, so you will have to wait till saturday, thats why i'm waiting to sand and polish (when i'm not supposed to wait that long) cuz its better to do stuff in natural light, you see more...

#32 · (Edited)
Quite frankly, I like the front end. It's very unique. Yes, it's ricey, but you know what, add a lil' bit of touch to it (i.e., grille or fog lights), and it should take care of it.

EDIT: Ever thought about painting the middle section of the front skirt black?

#35 ·
lol... i think you're the only one my friend... i was thinking about painting the whole thing black front rear and sides, and putting black vinyl on the sides of my car to give it that two tone look... but then figured... don't need any more attention... esp. from police... lol...

i have a feeling my car is going to be a police magnet now...

Good luck james with the rest of the work, unfortunately I will not be able to make any meet in Cal to see the final product - I am an East coast guy. Where I am, we do not have many mod'ed cars and basically no Camry's (their are pure family carriers only....). And yes, mod'ing should be more than tint, rim and springs...but I am stuck with that as it is my daily driver. I have a bit more freedom on my (our = wife) RX-8.

I just arrived in Tokyo (again) and I always enjoy seeing what the guys here do - many mod'ed cars of any kind (including body kits like yours) and its very fun to simply watch and meet these guys here, like you they simply have fun with whatever they do.

i was looking at pictures of lip kits, and noticed that there is some sort of liner around the edge that touches the body...

for my body kit, for the front and rear bumper cover i didn't think anything like that was necessary since it is a complete cover replacement...

but for the side skirts i'm thinking i'm gonna have to put something between the fiberglass side skirts and the body to prevent it from scratching my paint?

what is the material that is around the edge?

thanks in advance

For my kit they called it weatherstripping and it felt like a simply piece of soft rubber. It supposedly a) prevents the scratching and b) makes the connection watertight as their are always some imperfections. But I have not installed it by myself. Just from looking at it I would recommend to install it as it really closes any little gap between the kit and body.
