hi there, been a while sinse i posted here.. lol, anyhoo, i want to do some weight reduction to the camry... because i'm trying to increase the handling for agressive/race type driving, and i figure less weight will give me a better lbs per hp ratio, and help me corner a little faster ....

i removed the back seat, and the carpet and all the liner in the trunk and stuff.. and i've been thinking about taking out the a/c sinse i never use it.. also i want to cut out some of the secondary supports for the trunk and hood.... and finally i want to take out the headliner and door covers.... thats where part of the problem comes in

myu girlfriend doesent appreciate the stripped down "race" look, and could give a flip less about performance over looks.. she says i can only take off the door covers if i can make it look nice... any suggestions, mostly of all, i need pics to convince her, i thought about carpeting it w/ maybe a cardboard backing or something, but it just doesent seem right, i dont know....

also, can anybody think of anywhere else i can remove some extra weight???

thanx all, i look forward to your comments!!

my gf would hate loosing the dash, i wouldnt mind to much... but the car does have to be streetable.. i could do w/out cruise controll + ac , i like my power steering, but i was thinking a lightweight underdrive pully would make up for keeping the powersteering... but here's a question, what improvements would movint the battery to the trunk give me?

I think (not sure) that losing the is not illegal as long as you've got your speedometer etc. On my 93 you can take the dash out and keep that stuff in. I haven't done it but I know cause the gauge cluster is screwed on to the back and is not touching any part of the dash. It would look butt ugly though. Not sure about a gen2, sorry.

lol, actually what happened is, when we bought the car, the lady told us "the ac doesent work" so we never tried it, just assumed it didnt work..then one day, my gf was driving it, and decided to give it a try.... and sure enough it worked... but the thing is, we never had a car w/ ac in it, and were used to the heat, so we never really run it... its just a waste of engine power (to drive the belt) and weight...lol

btw, i'm still wondering what the battery move will do, i know it would shift the weight, but how will that help?

better weight distrubution, helps with handling. closer you are to 50/50 the better. you could also get a smaller battery, something like what a honda civic uses, should be enough to crank the car.

Honestly weight reduction in a stock car is about the most pointless thing you can do. All you are doing is pissing off your girlfriend and making your car look like crap. Its a Gen2 camry...it aint gonna be fast or nimble without some actual work...suspension, engine swap that sort of thing.

With all that crap, you've mabye shaved what? 200lbs..max? and you've reduced your car to a noisey rattly peice of crap? why dont you spend that time and energy on putting new springs/struts or a rear sway bar. both of those things will affect the handling 10x more than having 200lbs less in your car.

AND best of all, your girlfriend wont dump you!

Another thing...dont remove the power steering, it would completly defeat the purpose of what you are trying to do. pull the belt off the powersteering pump and try driving the car around town if you dont believe me. You'd better have some buff fore-arms to get it moving.

also...do you actually race the gen2? cause if you dont, then whats the point? and if you do, what class/event because i believe most events will push you into a modified class if you have a stripped interior. and a stock gen2 minus some weight aint gonna be very competitive in any class, much less a modified class.

Let the guy do what he wants to do. If his gf dumps him cause of a car, then she is not the right girl. And maybe he can't afford all those fancy struts, springs, rear sway bar and what not. He said he wants to do some more agressive driving, hopefully on a track, so this is his way of doing it. And, oh yeh, IT'S FREE!! We should be more supportive of what he's doing. He's putting his time into that car because he loves driving it and wants it to handle a little better. Tah-dah, a driving enthusiast! (I'm guessing) Good luck with your car xteraco:clap: , and if you don't like it shaved and all later, you can just put it all back together.

Pull out those bumper beams... an easy 100lbs right there. Hopefully you can put the bumper back on to look normal.

Do at your own risk, of course... those are your low-speed crash protection!

come on now, i am a seriouse enthusiast, not some 12 year old kid, i'm fairly certain that i'll need my gastank, lol... i can see why some may want to discourage me, but poking fun just seems a little immature

anyhoo, as far as the springs and stuff goes, i do want all that stuff, but i'm in transition between jobs, so i cant really go and spend all my money on that, i wish i could... there are things i plan on doing for the motor, but thats not my concern right now... i think that if shaving off 200lbs will make me 1second faster, then it was well worth it!:)

yeah, check into windows, if you can you can swap them to lexan (that's what I'd use, so you can still retain some strength), also take out your power steering if you can steer the car without it, this will not only remove weight but it'll free up some parasitic drag from crank pulley, you can also remove the air conditioner (don't just pull the belt off it, take the compressor, evaporator and so on out), you can take out the cruise control if you want, although the weight of that is under 5lbs so there's no real point. Take out all your seats except for what you need (driver's seat) and use a lighter bucket-style seat for that, use c/f or fiberglass body panels, get lighter rims, remove the spare, change all auto-functions over to manual (doors/windows/mirrors), completely remove your stereo.

I think this will get you a good weight reduction. Have fun.

replace all your glass with 3/16" clear tuffack polycarbonate.
That will shave about 100lbs or so, more if you have power windows.

replace the front bumper beam with aluminum square tube, approximately 30lbs.
Don't just remove it, your suspension will wander all over the place.

Don't let your girlfriend ride in the car, this will shave 255lbs.

Most of the time, the plastic will look like crap. Take some time and it could look good. You have to rivet it to the flange that the rubber molding sticks to.

If you have a rollcage, you can cut out the inner panels of your doors as well, you'll get 10-20 lbs from that.
Dump all heating, air conditioning, etc. use a fan to clear the windows, and you will save about 50lbs too.

I might do all this one day.
