I have read this forum a number of times, but today I actually registered because I need serious help.

The car is a 2000 Camry XLE V6 J-VIN. Last week the speedometer stopped working abruptly while the rest of the cluster was fine and the transmission started shifting wonky. I got a P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor code and it threw the CEL. I got another speed sensor from a V6 Solara at the JY today (not that it matters, it's the same part # 4cyl and V6).

SO THEN I DID THIS

IT GETS WORSE

After removing the single 10mm bolt from the sensor, I tried twisting it around with channel lock pliers to break it free, as suggested in this youtube video I watched

But all that did was chew up the plastic at the connector end of the sensor. The above video also suggests prying it out, which is what I did on the JY car. (The V6 location is a little different btw, and accessed from the top).

Prying on it broke the top off, and when I was trying to retrieve the lower bit from the hole with needle nose pliers, I accidentally pushed it through into the trans. :wtf:

Now I'm afraid I've accidentally the whole trans. What do I do now? Thanks in advance.

Here's a thread that shows the location in a V6 car.

Wow the person that made that DIY has 1 post and never posted again.

I don't know what I would do maybe try sucking it back up with a vacuum cleaner? Or maybe a magnet? Can you see what's left of the sensor at all?

You can try to get the metal piece, with a magnet type retriever ... get the smaller end started in the hole.

oh man, that sucks. if its like my problem, your VSS is probably fine and the resonator in your speedo is going bad. search my threads for fix. I hope you get the rest of that VSS out of there. good luck

Use a bore-scope/endo-scope hooked up to your phone with a light on the end of it to locate it in the trans if you can see it with your own eyes... these scopes are now CHEAP and you'll find 1,000 uses for them on your cars or around the house... once you locate it, it's just gonna be a matter of PATIENCE to get it out... magnets..picks.. hooks.. more probing with the scope etc... keep a happy attitude and go slow and you'll succeed... :)

This endoscope is only $10:

I was sort of looking for more specific advice about A541E transmissions, like maybe from someone who has had one apart. I don't know what I'm looking at here. I'm about medium advanced enthusiast diy, I've swapped transmissions before but not in a fwd Toyota.

Maybe I wasn't clear before about this sensor piece not physically coming back out that silly hole, if I could even find it and get a magnet on it. It is the same size as the hole in the trans and seals with an o-ring. I was not able to get it out with needle nose pliers when it was already 50% out previously. I'm 90% sure I'm going to have to pull the trans, I'm just looking for a tech or something to verify that.

Anyways, I believe it is in the differential portion of the transaxle housing and it is not entirely clear if that is separate from the rest of the trans (it has its own drain plug) and I am hoping there is some sort of inspection plate or something I could remove to get this bastard without completely removing the transmission.

I would also like to know that if it does come to that, what specifically do I take apart to get into that differential area. Thank you.

Thanks again for the replies fellas. I'm still in a little bit of shock today that I took out the Camry, fortunately I have another car.

Today I'm going to find out as much as I can about getting into that diff cover. Are there any good resources, like factory service manuals and transmission manuals, available online?

At 6:45!

This is where it is and what I need to do! I believe that diff cover is facing the rear of the car when the trans is installed and I am hoping there is a way to do that on the car! Probably not but I can dream :)

Easy as long as you have the clearance to take the diff cover off, otherwise you have to make clearance by removing stuff or dropping the trans. Read my post, it details disassembly straight from ALLDATA (essentially the FSM). Remember to use orange FIPG when reassembling.

Got any pics of your FIPG application? I would get worried if I didn't apply it all around evenly, need assurances
