Hello from San Diego, CA. I own a 1993 Toyota Pickup 2WD Xtracab Deluxe with 240,000+ Miles. I became the owner of "TAQUITO" in 2013 when my father passed, he really did love the truck. Driving it all theses years I can see why, its just an amazing old truck. It's in need of some cosmetic repairs and could use fresh upholstery, other than that its my dependable every day driver.

My wife owns a 2010 Toyota Matrix.

I've searched trough these helpful posts looking for wisdom many times, mostly when I get stuck doing a repair that was beyond my ability lol.

Hello from San Francisco, CA.

Hello from San Francisco.

I just bought a 1991 Toyota Pickup 2WD w/ 107,000 miles. It's in really good shape inside and out, which is rare here in SF. Most of the ones i've found are pretty beat up. I'll mainly use as a commuter for work and surf.

I'd like to thank everyone for your wisdom and insights on this forum. It made the buying experience easy for me.

Hello all, I have a 1994 base model pickup with 107000 original miles. I bought it two years ago with only 77K. No AC no power steering just a tight little truck. It does have one quirk though and I will be posting it shortly just as soon as I figure out where that blog is.

Hey folks. New to the Toyota family...moving over from the Volvo family.

I will be picking up a pretty ordinary, but pretty special (to me) truck in a week or so. Its a 1990 regular cab long bed with the 4cyl and automatic. Its pretty ugly at the moment and full of random trash from a farmer...but it runs well with a jump and it only has 139K miles on it.

The truck is special because it was my grandpa's truck. His first new truck. I remember riding with him driving it home...he was so excited. We spent many a year dragging his little jon boat around fishing the local creeks all we could.

When he died, 13 years ago, the truck was sold and was used a putt-around truck for a retired farmer. I happened to see it in the edge of a field when driving by the other week and have finally convinced him to sell it to me.

It's gonna take some work, but it will be back on the road soon, as my daily driver. It will also be used to haul that same jon boat around to the local fishing holes with my kids.

Hi folks, Jim here. I just picked up my first ever Toyota. I bought a 1992 Toyota Hilux 22RE, automatic, with a tick over 87K miles. Everything works on the truck, and it was owned by an older gentleman that no longer needed the truck. Since it's totally stock I'm going to leave it that way, and just get all the fluids up to date. It's an amazing little truck, and quite fun to drive.

I haven't got any pictures yet, but will post them up after I get the little thing cleaned up properly. It has sit in a garage for the better part of the last 5 years, so it's a bit dusty and dirty.

Just got my 1988 imported 4 door Toyota Hilux 2.4l straight 4 5speed with 202,000km or 126,000 miles, power steering, power side mirrors, original everything except it has a 4in rough country lift and was garage kept for the last 10 years with only 10,000 miles put on it 1 rust spot on the bed is all the damage. I’d like to know more about maybe a turbo kit for the diesel so it could have a little more power to get up step mountains and what not and maybe what the dimensions are to get a hitch installed or if a 88 regular pickup hitch will fit it?

New guy here. I've been a long time Toyota nut and builder. I've recently started making rack and pinion swap kits for this gen of trucks. Currently working with Jeff to get a vendor status, but the kits should be available here pretty soon.

I have an 89 pickup with a Mustang II rack and pinion, currently being rebuild by Jim Putney.

Hello from Texas

I'm the 3rd owner of a 1990 Toyota Pickup 2wd manual. It now has 160,000 miles in it and has been through various ups and downs: repairs, mods, died on the freeway, faulty temp gauge, crank no start, starts then stops, and now it decides to start whenever it feels like. It's sitting in my driveway right now and it brings me joy if I could start it. The biggest mod I've done to it was that I added air bags to the rear. The biggest upgrade I did to it was that I added an A/C kit.

Hi all from Northern California. I have owned a 1991 2wd 22re for a little over 3 years. She only has 242,000 miles on her so far. I'm looking forward to learning how to take better care of her from you all.
I finally replaced a daily driver (1998 Avalon) with a newer car so I should have time to work on the truck more now.

Hello from Southern California. Proud owner of a 1993 Toyota pickup with 265,000 miles. The truck has been in my family for over 25 years. The truck has been my work horse and has never let me down. This year I had the 4 cylinder engine and clutch redone by a "mechanic" and slowly have been able to fix many things that were done wrong by the "expert". i have read many conversations here but never joined until now. this is the best place to find honest information on repairing your own truck and be proud of the work performed. I want to thank everyone in advance for their help in the future

JDeere! Don't do it!

Have you ever met someone who said "I'm so glad I sold my first ride..." or "I'm so glad I sold my Toyota Pickup..." NOPE! It has never happened. You've got a cool story there! You've got to have a name for such an old friend.... what do you call her? Got a picture? Even better - a picture of you standing next to her when you first got her? Priceless!

PS - to whomever bought my 1964 Chevy Short Wide 4X4, I will pay you 5 times what you paid me in 1978 to have it back!

Greetings from AZ. Just bought a 1989 Longbed 3VZE with 38,000 original miles (I know - unbelievable but true). Sat outside a lot so the paint isn't so good but no rust. Looking forward to delving into the Forum and learning as much as I can about this beauty. I find that technical data is minimal on-line and the Chilton Book just doesn't answer all my questions. She doesn't need much mechanically except for those things that just must be upgraded on a 30+ year old truck.

Great news! I have a 1989 that's already broken in (234,000), and can save you all that hassle! I'll even drive to AZ to make the trade! Was it in the bone yard at Davis-Montham next to my old F-14 or something? Seriously tho - that's so awesome. I'd wager ALL of us would love to know how you came to get your hands on that?? And it didn't happen without a picture for proof, ok? What's near the top of your upgrade list?

Trails! What trails? Check out Brown's Camp, OHV area in Oregon's Tillamook Forest. Some trails to be had there, for sure - about 250 miles worth of mud, rocks, and sand. Where will you go to offroad? Love my extracab - a big upgrade from my '86 standard cab to my '89 extracab.

Here's link, or Youtube some awesome vids of it.

And Me?

Howdy everyone. I sold a 1986 Longbed Singlecab 222R (which are only going up in value) joined up here, and upgraded to a 1989 4X4 SR5 Extra cab V6 3.0L with 230,000+ miles on it. Yes, power windows, door locks, and a sunroof. I have a higher rise, moss coated Brahma canopy that I am refurbishing right now to replace this low headroom one. Pictures when it's done. I have an extra set of SR5 Aluminum 15X8 wheels and I'm looking for a good set of tires for them - will probably stay close to the stock 31 X10.50 R15's. I live in Oregon, and most of my off roading will be on my own timber property. It came with a Warn winch, which will be handy for my place.

No rust on 'em up here either, AZ Longhorn! Moss? Yes.

Last week was a new carrier bearing.
This week, Windshield Wipers.

How about you?

Bob

Hello, Barry from Florida got a 1994 Toyota dlx pickup 4x4, extended cab, long wheel base, 5 manual with 3.0V6 3VZE
engine. I've owned this truck for 17 years, and she has 330K miles so looking to do a rebuild. Thanks for the add!
Hi Barry! 17 years, huh? Does it have a name? I have a rebuilt 3.0 3VZE in mine currently, would consider just going to the 3.4 next time. My '86 had 375,000 on her 22RE, my new to me '89 has 240,000 - so it's practically new, right? Got any pics? Do they rust in Florida?

Best,
Bob

Howdy, Mark from SoCal. I've owned a 94 regular cab w/manual everything since it had 8 miles on the odo. All stock except I added AC, bumper and mirror the day I bought it. Now she's got 290K miles. Until this last year she's never had a major repair and very few minor ones. Really, I only replaced the radiator. Funny thing, as I usually engine brake and many of it's miles were a long commute from the mountains to the city and back, it hasn't even used up the original brake pads yet. I checked them at 100K, they were still shiny, 150K a little dust, 200K went to parts store and bought replacement pads, surely by now... Nope, old pads had more meat on them than the new ones did. Amazing truck!

This last year I decided to rebuild the engine. It was beginning to make noises and leak oil from the main seal. So, I went to HF and bought the engine stand and cherry picker and did it. Took a few months as I could only work weekends and evenings on it but I got it done. Now it has about 800 miles on the "new" engine and she's running fine.

Howdy Mark! Thee's not a one of us here that isn't warmed by such a great story, and there are a ton of people who regret the day they let their "little" Toyota Pickup go. Thanks for sharing the rebuild story. Do you have the 3.0VZE or the 22RE?

Bests,
Bob

#36 ·
Hey Mark! Oh, absolutely, I've had both and they are not for racing for sure. The 22RE is as rock solid as any engine made. I've got the V6 now, not a whole lot more power anyways. Mine was rebuilt just recently. I see you also have a 2019 Tacoma, so you have some versatility either way. Pics if you got 'em!

Hey all, here to scope out this truck's community. Looking at buying one right now and just education myself on what to look out for and what to pay attention to. Been a subie guy forever but want/need a cool little truck that's reliable and easy to work on. Thus, a Hilux :)
