Let play a scenario:

If money is no object and you see both brand new 1st gen matrix xR and scion iM at the Toyota dealer, which one of those twos is a better buy for the long haul? And which one of those two you think or know is practical for daily commuter?

what does the odometer have to do with it? lol... though it will die, the car will probably go far beyond that...

I'd say iM for looks, but Matrix for the money... I haven't heard many good things about the motors on the Corollas lately, so I'm hoping the iM is not stuck with the same problems.

It has a manual, but no roof yet. I'd put the iM on my list when they finally offer trim levels and get away from the monospec of Scion that still afflicts the 2017 model. That, and the LEDs that the Corolla has standard.

Thats a tuff choice.
1zz vs the 2zr hopefully in manual trim. Both being painfully slow but fuel efficient. Either one capable of going 300K+.

In the looks department my nod goes to the iM. The concept car was the sh!t! Athough we got a watered down version, the iM is still a good looking hatch.

Practicality I'd say the Matrix, due to it's size. it can carry people with way more comfort than an iM. And the cargo space in the Matrix is probably about double that of the iM.

Insurance on both these models are about as low as it gets. I think insurance is a non issue. I'm willing to bet thata even the hot rod XRS version didnt see an increase in insurance cost vs a base model.

Toyota needs to release a hot hatch version of the iM with a pissed off turbo 2AR, and possibly awd. a WRC contender to put them back on the performance map. The Yaris rally car is cute, but c'mon!

If money is no object, then the newer car is pretty much always better. The Matrix looks good but the iM is a significantly nicer inside and outside. The Matrix is going to be more practical as it has slightly more cargo capacity (seats up and down) and the plastic lined floor. The Matrix is also faster and less complex than the iM. The iM will be MUCH safer and better equipped standard. The newest 1st Gen Matrix is 8-9 years old. The iM just came out.

It is a bad comparison overall. For the money, the Matrix is the better buy. I would not get a car payment on an iM over a Matrix.
