Sluggish Acceleration

I have a 99 Toyota Tacoma, v6, trd, 4wd. I'm having the problem of slow/sluggish acceleration from stop to go. I mostly notice it in 1st and 2nd gear but it does happen in the other gears. I've tried using some fuel injector cleaner a few times, I've tried replacing the fuel filter and I've tried getting a different brand of gas. I've ran a few tanks of gas through my engine with the fuel cleaners and I'm still having this problem, can anybody tell me what this issue might be or where I might begin to look to see what this problem could be?

I haven't checked the spark plugs, depending what answers I got on here would be my next check.

Is this with the pedal stomped all the way to the floor? Is this something that has changed? You sure it isn't just the way the vehicle is? Automatic or manual?
It happens when I stomp on the pedal and when I slowly step on it. It hasn't always been like this, it has just started doing this not that long ago, roughly about a week. It is a manual.

Ok, that rules out the transmission as the source of the problem ;)

Mass air flow sensor could be dirty (try cleaning it). Have you checked your AIR FILTER for excess dirt/debris? Could possibly also be a throttle position sensor, or an oxygen sensor. I don't suppose its throwing any codes (check engine light), is it? Note that sensor issues don't necessarily throw codes -- they're just easier to figure out if they do.

I'll check the Mass air flow sensor and see if that's dirty. But the air filter seems to be fairly clean still. I do have a check engine light that did come on briefly but it turned off after the next time I turned my truck on, I'm sure it's probably going to be an issue but it's not consistent if that makes sense?

I don't know if this is any help. My supercharged 98 tacoma would hesitate or appear to misfire under heavy acceleration. The cause was a carbon trail inside the boot of the #3 cyl coil pack. The coil pack/boot tested well electrically so I never thought it was a problem. There were light brown spots at the top of the insulator and near the hex/threads. Sandpaper on a drill bit to clean out the carbon and some dielectric grease with new plugs solved it.

My non certified opinion would be one or more of several things. Fuel, fire, and/or air. If you have coil packs, I'd get an ECU scan to see if it's one of them. If so, replace it as well as the spark plugs. If it doesn't have coilpacks, then I'd change the plug wires as well as the plugs. Note the condition of each individual plugs. I always put the old plug into the new plug box and write on it which cylinder it came from. Then I store the box of plugs in the bottom of my tool box for comparision later (if there's a trend) or for emergency spares. Air filter needs to be fairly clean. These are the most common issues and the easiest to address, in my non certified opinion. Fuel, fire, and/or air.

Disclaimer: I am in no way certified by any auo maker or any independant auto repair school. If you spend money on parts that aren't needed that I reccomended, I am not responsible. Good luck.

my 99 v6 4wd is doing the same thing

Mine also includes skipping under heavy acceleration. It is pulling three codes also: P0420 Catalyst System Efficency Below Threshold Bank 1, P0171 Bank 1 Sensor Lean, P0116 Engine Coolant Temp Sensor 1 Circuit Range Performance. --- Im not sure what these mean--- does anyone else? Thanks

In my non certified opinion, I'd say the codes that read are a result of misfiring. Which makes me assume you don't have coilpacks since there's not a code for particular cylinder misfires. Change your plugs, at a minimum, and change your plug wires if it doesn't clear up the issue. The MAF sensor is easy to do as well, so I'd do that also. If you take the tools needed to do these things before leaving the parts house, then you can see what works prior to leaving the store and going home to do it just to find out you have to go back and get more stuff.

1) plugs
2) MAF cleaning
3) plug wires
