How do you feel about Toyota moving towards making common features subscription based? ... such as key fob features or heated seats...

I have purchased nothing but Toyota Camrys for me and my family since 1985. For me this is a big enough reason for me to stop buying Toyotas. I will not buy a car from a company that charges me for features I have historically purchased and own when I buy the car. I haven't been happy with charges for Media Systems either. The only subscription service that I would pay for is internet service. The current Media Systems use the services I already pay my cellular company for. What added service/value is Toyota providing?

Old news. Been old news since 2018. There are plenty of threads about this.

This only hurts long term ownership. We already know new owners are gonna trade their vehicles in two years.

If you don't want it then get rid of it. Welcome to 2021. More like 2018. Really more like 2022.

Funny, a subscription for heated seats.

Old News? Did they change their policy? In my world people don't trade new cars in in 2 years. Even if they did someone is going to own that car in the used car market. It's a bad policy and one where if Toyota gets there foot in the door with these subscription services it will not end with key fobs. These subscriptions are not for added services. They are for features that have already been paid for. It's wrong and Toyota should cease and desist.

Yes, it is old news.

Options or subscriptions? There is a difference.

It's about making money. That is what it comes down to and having subscriptions for certain services, typically map, XM, and cellular related, is gonna be the easiest way to make money.

I have no problem when a company charges for a subscription when they are actually adding a service. Making a physical feature of your car, such as remote start or heated seats, a subscription feature is wrong. It is something that has already been paid for and costs Toyota nothing after the sale.

Rule number 1 of fair subscription economy: charge for added service, not the non-removal of service.

Rule number 2 of fair subscription economy: only charge for services that require running maintenance, or which includes continuous improvement (ex software updates).

Rule number 3 of fair subscription economy: in case you forget, see rule number 1 again. And again. And again. And again.

Who made up these rules? And as we all know nothing is fair. Well, 99.9% of the population does that's over 40.
Eventually, every company will go with the subscription model. It's just the way we are going in this world.
And yes the remote start and many other features are linked to the telematics that DOES COST TOYOTA MONEY you just paying for the vehicle does pay for those costs.

There is no reason why remote start needs to be tied into an ongoing service. Toyota chose to design it that way. There seem to be a lot of people who are willing to just give in when when companies take advantage of us. I'm not willing to do that. I do agree that if there is a necessary ongoing cost to Toyota that is a valid reason to pass the cost onto the customer. My point is that companies are including features into subscriptions where there is no ongoing cost to the company.

I don't have to roll over and agree that it's okay. I can also choose to stop being their customer.
Then do so. I said it before, subscriptions only effect long term ownership. If you want remote start, get aftermarket.

So exactly what features are they including in subscriptions that you have a problem with?
