Trunk Lid Stuck on '89 Camry, Possibly Broken Lock - Any DIY Solutions?

The trunk lid on my Camry is stuck shut, unfortunately. The keyway is normally aligned vertically, but now it's aligned horizontally (i.e. how it would be aligned when I turn the key to open the trunk). Also, the latch underneath the driver's seat seems to work, as in I can pull it up and hear the latch mechanism release. Yet, the lid is still very much stuck shut.

Unfortunately, that's all I know. I wasn't the one who closed it last, so I can't elaborate on how it sounded or felt when it was last shut.

Any idea what's going here? Is there a DIY solution to fix this issue, or should I take it to a locksmith?

Two possibilities here - if you have folding rear seats - just fold them and climb back there to see what's wrong. If you have the fixed rear seat, you will have to remove the seadback to get there. The rear seat bottom can be removed by pulling forward on the black tabs at the base of the seat then lifting up. The seatback is held by two 12mm bolts on each bottom corner, then hooks at the top. Lift the seatback up after removing the bolts.

If the key slot is in horizontal position, the trunk is locked and the driver seat latch won't work (prevent thiefs from accessing the trunk from inside the car.) To open the trunk with the key, you have to unlock it first to vertical and then turn some more to about 2 o'clock. The inside latch only works when the key slot is in vertical position. If the key turns but the trunk won't open, it's likely the tip of lock is broken off and the tab that pulls/pushes on the rod when you turn the key fell off the lock. The new lock on rockauto is only 10 bucks.
