Compact Recreational Vehicle ... now what does RAV 4 stand for ?

 

These are guesses.

CRV - Crossover Recreational Vehicle or Compact Recreational Vehicle

RAV4-Recreational Active Vehicle - 4

I thought perhaps the 4 in the RAV4 was for 4-wheel drive, but RAV4 comes in 2 wheel drive also. I thought maybe doors, but you can get RAV4 with different number of doors. Then I thought 4-cylinders, but you can now buy a RAV4 with 6-cylinders.....

 

CR-V? no idea. I've heard Comfortable Runabout Vehicle.

I think it is going to get to the point where they are all jsut named a jumble of letters. WHile you are trying to figure that one out how about LS460. ES350. RX350. RL. TL, MDX, G35, and the list goes on and on. THey arent imaganitive enough to come up with names anymore so all the manufacturers jsut come up with a bunch of letters. Oh yeah I forgot the entire Cadillac lineup and now the Lincoln Lineup.

 

^^I know sometimes the numbers are engine sizes. Like say ES350 could mean it has a 3.5L engine.

Who would rice a CRV?

 

IIRC, CRV means Civic Recreational Vehicle (CRV is based of Civic), ES is Executive Sedan, LS is Luxury Sedan, GS is Grand Sedan.


I read something like that about the lexi before pressroom.toyota.com was re-done when I first arrived at TN.

as for the rav 4 being "now avalable with 6 cyl" keep in mind if it was named before it was available w/ V6 its perfectly viable as basis of the name....even if it isnt. there are many things that outlive the accuracy of their names.

haha...thats true CRV does stand for that...
As for the RAV4 I think the 4 stands for that it was originally intended to seat 4 people. The reason i think this is true is because..as with the MR2..the 2 stands for 2 seater.

I visited Japan about six years ago and saw CRVs with the words "comfortable recreational vehicle" on the rear.
