Hey Fellow Camry people, this month I am going to tackle the crazy power steering rack replacement and while I am in there I am going to replace the sway bar bushings.

Problem is I was on rockauto.com and there was different mm sized sway bar bushings, and I have no idea what to choose. I think ill go with polyurethane and possibly MOOG brand unless you have a better recommendation BUT I am just not sure what to pick.

I have a 96 camry LE 5SFE stock, i could use some ideas thanks for all the help you guys provide!

Use metric open end wrenches as a gage to measure the sway bar diameter. The smallest one that fits is your size.

I just replaced my front sway bar bushings and went with the Beck-Arnley brand. They looked and worked fine. I will say I was surprised that the old bushings were not in as bad as shape as I would have thought.

The bolt toward the firewall is going to be difficult to get out because of clearance. I purchased a ratcheting box end wrench set from Harbor Freight just for this job. (I think it is 12mm). If you do use a ratcheting wrench be very alert and careful because you can get the rear bolt almost unscrewed into a position where the bolt lacks just a bit to come out but the bolt head and wrench will be wedged up against the firewall and you cannot reverse direction!

Please make some notes on the rack replacement and post a thread about the experience. My rack continues to have a slow leak so it is going to be replaced in a few months when it gets warmer.

From what I've read the two bolts (19mm) that attach the rack are going to be very tight - over 100 ft. lbs. The replacement racks do not come with rack bushings. Let us know if one needs to order new rack bushings or if yours were still in decent shape and could be swapped over to your new rack.

Duly noted on the MOOG bushings. Yeah my sway bar bushings are as strong as marshmellow right now so its time for those to go.

The tie rod ends on the new steering rack i got look fine (new as in over 100,000 miles less than mine on them) I have a friend who has done this before but on other cars but he said he wants to help plus he wants my old steering rack for a dune buggy he is making.

I am replacing my rack because they are worn out and have play in them and the rubber bellows have leaks so its spewing fluid everywhere.

So your saying its most likely I have the smallest sized bushings? I have no way to measure the thickness of them at the moment.

I have been told polyurathane is better than rubber but arent beck arnley rubber?

i have replaced a rack on 96 camry before the rack comes with new bushings.
It was a 2.2L
(Not my car, a customers,I work in repair shop)
It so easy in lift, plus having air tools.
The biggest issue is removing the sway bar. The reason was the bolts for sway bar were siezed.
Two of them broke, I got lucky and they came out. (heat them up)
You might have problem removing the steering shaft from rack.. spray that sucker..

Okay it didnt make sense what you meant by measuring the sway bar, now i get it (DUHHH!!!)

So I figured the dealership has oem sway bar bushings at about the average price of like a beck arnley, so Ill probably do that, but the sway bar end I cant figure out brand to go with, dealership says 85$ a piece for those.... yeah right, and on rockauto these beck arnleys have a red heart I am guessing they are popular

Someone said the steering rack has its own bushings... What bushings? Someone show me what this is so If I need to I will get them, thanks!

$85 is for the sway bar end links. OEM bushings should be no more than $10 apiece. You misread the parts diagram, or your dealer misunderstood your request.

Given that OEM ones are really not that much more expensive than aftermarket, I personally would do OEM. Or polyurethane bushings, but getting the right size could be a hassle.

Anyone have any ideas where i can order 24mm sway bar bushings for my car? When I look up 1996 toyota camry on, rockauto, parts train, Advanced Auto parts etc, all they have available is 15 or 16mm sway bar bushings for my car. Is it possible because mine is an American made California spec that its different? On partsgeek.com its giving me like 20 different options depending on when and where my car was made but its not very clear.

And yes i compared the beck arnleys to the ones I took off, they are extremely small, they wouldnt even fit over the bar.

Should I look up sway bar bushings for a V6 spec camry? How big are those sway bars? PLEASE HELP!

Here's what I have in my 96 4cyl.

These were a vast improvement over the old soft rubber bushings. Polyurethane bushings also gave a much more stable feel through the corners, because they don't compress/deflect as much, if at all, compared to rubber. Even new rubber bushing wouldn't perform as well as polyurethane. An added plus is that polyurethane will not degrade/deteriorate like rubber.

I used the swaybar bushings from whiteline that came w/ my swaybar. You can order their swaybar bushings separately too. I think the energy suspension ones are cheaper though. Really like energy suspension on my front control arms :)

For your steering rack, if it gets play in it again, you ought to try the whiteline steering rack bushing kit. It's awesome. I still have my original rack on my '01 V6 w/ ~81k miles on it now, and I replaced the bushings about 5k miles ago. There is 0 play in the steering; it's very precise. I just wish I had wider tires to make it feel a bit heavier.
