Howdy y’all! I have recently purchased a 2002 4 door auto 1.5L Echo. I was curious how hard it would be to either do an engine swap or how difficult it would be to turbo the engine I have now & if it would be worth it? Or swap for bigger engine then turbo the new engine? I am completely new to the smaller car/engine world so any steps or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks y’all!

Welcome to the forum and to the "small car world"!

Anything is possible. I think when it comes to imports, transplanting a factory turbocharged motor (with it's accompanying computer & harness) is easier than adding a turbo to a non-factory turbocharged motor. But that's because I don't mind swapping entire wiring looms, and I don't like the inherent messiness involved with tuning a newly turbocharged motor. There's always variables you don't expect.

That's just me, though, so let's see what other folks have to say. :)

Haltech ECU and knowledge on programming and you are set on anything. I most certainly don't have that info and I don't know anyone with that info. Check out almost any YouTube car show, if you can do what they can do and know the types of people that know and have the budget and you can do anything.

Well, that's fair. I come from a lineage of resorting to bailing wire and duct tape when necessary, so spending a grand or two on just the ECU is waaaaay outta my wheelhouse. Looks like a good match though, as long as money's no object. I admit I assumed the OP wasn't looking to spend a whole ton of cash on the project... but I've seen Yugo's with $20k worth of audio. Where there's a will (and a hefty bank account), there's a way. :)

There's a mix of either making use of what you got or just not doing that and setting it up brand new. Preferably, if I was really gonna make a basic car with little to no aftermarket support (aka almost all non-truck and non-sports related Toyota) into a race car, I'd like a fully customized ECU instead of trying to reflash or piggyback off an OEM ECU.

Just check out Mighty Car Mods MR2 videos. It was either mess with a burnt (as in actually burnt and melted) 30 year old ECU with old technology or grab a Haltech and make it even better.

Of course I sure don't have that kind of money nor do I know the right people and likely a lot of people who can do it are not gonna want to do it. It's not what you know, it's who you know and I sure don't know anyone.

I am also very doubtful of anyone's ability here to do these kinds of modifications because the people who have done it don't need a forum's help in modifying their vehicle beyond the average DIYer.

RWD 2AR-FE turbo stroked to 2.7L 800HP drift Corolla Hatchback anyone?

Well said. As far as I can tell this is the only Echo based group currently active. There's a Facebook page or two... but... ugh.

Hoping someone somewhere will have attempted a turbo upgrade and will eventually chime in :)
Only one way to find out. Pretty sure R9K Tuned Facebook has either a video of an Echo or a Yaris 1ZZ or 2ZZ turbo.
