2014 Toyota Highlander Gets Bold New Look, Same Old Engines

With little new under the hood of the 2014 Highlander, Toyota is hoping you won’t notice with a bold, muscular redesign.

Unveiled today at the New York Auto Show, there’s a big new grille that flows into some pointy headlights with slab sides and large, blocky flared fenders. A set of 18-inch wheels are standard while 19s can be had as an option.

As for the engines, as mentioned, what’s old is new. A base 2.7-liter 4-cylinder is standard while the 3.5-liter V6 remains as an upgrade. That engine now also gains a six-speed automatic transmission, a much-needed upgrade from the old 5-speed unit. No fuel economy numbers have been provided, though the extra gear should help improve at least a mile per gallon or two on the highway.
Check out the new 2014 Toyota Highlander at AutoGuide.com, and be sure to see all our 2013 New York Auto Show Coverage.

Other than the sixth gear, I'm surprised how little they changed it inside and out. More of an update than a redesign. They've also enlarged it again, seeming to push into Land Cruiser territory.
Ok since you've said that, would you buy another (the new one)? Especially considering how much you offorad, and its not the full time AWD like the system in the 2nd gen. Or would you finally make the leap to a taco that you have been talking about?

yucky rims.. look like my winter ones with chrome skins on them

I'll stick to my rusting steelies lol

This is shitty upgrade like my Civic... 2012 rolled around and BAM an ugly version of my 08 with the same engine...

PISS POOR PERFORMANCE TOYOTA!

Also, my favorite feature!

What the hell am I going to put in here?

+ 1 for panoroof though.

Obviously your man purse :D

This is after all a "soccer mom" car. You had to expect something like that. Acura has a similar container and they advertise it holding briefcases and laptops. Just different demographics.

I really like the new design. I agree its not drastic change but when a vehicle is made wider, longer, gets a new interior, and a new awd system, more gears, it qualifies for a redesign I guess. I love my 2011 Highlander but if I can pull it off I'll be buying the next generation asap. I would like more feedback on the dynamic torque awd versus the balanced 50/50 full time split which was on the current gen highlander. Wondering if performance on snow is any different or its more or less the same (my guess). Being front biased it probably saves some on fuel economy.

I'm a little dissapointed all the way around. While I applaud the removal of all the wood from the interior, I don't know if it looks any nicer. In my eyes it looks old, dated and down market like a CRV. The exterior looks like they gave it a face-lift and just streached the '13 front end around a more curved front end. I actually like the back end and side view, but the wheels do nothing for me. I prefer the more simple spoke design of the '13.

Everyone talks about how great a six-speed transmission is, but I'm not convinced. I've driven too many SUV's and cars with 6-speed auto's that hunt and peck for gears and are always a gear too high for what was needed. In addition to all of the nice things about our '13, it was the 5-speed that attracted me to it because all of the others were so poorly executed. As it is I get as good, if not better mileage out of the 5-speed on my car as many of the competitors do with 6-speeds.

"NEW" sure looks a lot like everything else on the road. What the hell happened to individual styling for brands? Not bad... but nothing earth shattering. It's actually pretty attractive from the side.

Carryover engines aren't a big deal. Not much wrong with the current engine lineup.

That's just the old Tribeca with a new nose.

Nothing offensive, just like gen 1 and gen 2. Looks like they finally addressed the useless 3rd row seat by a three inch body stretch, which might also fix the useless cargo space when the 3rd row is up. Hopefully they addressed the 2nd row center "depressed" seat along with the width enhancement.

Toy's had at least 6 years to fuss wit the 6-speed, which will probably be as as seamless the current 5.

They better have had remedied the throttle response and horrid electric steering.

Last, the 3.5L better not rattle on start up....

Oh, and maybe they made it easier for all the trim pieces to be removed, monthly. For SP.

I'm not holding my breath. The numb, feedback-less steering seems to have become the standard across the model line. Except for maybe the FR-S, just about every review of every vehicle them make includes comments about the vague steering.

I don't like the exterior design at all. It looks bulky. It doesn't have the sporty look of the current version. I like the interior design on the other hand. It looks more luxurious and high quality. I won't be trading mine with this new one. It is little disappointing. I get the fact that to have a larger trunk space while the 3rd row is in use you need a larger vehicle but for me it is in the expense of its looks. If you want something larger you can buy a Sequoia and with this paste the next HL will be as large as a Sequoia. This is becoming like cell phone screen size. I feel like the current HL is the perfect size.

I stick to what I said when the spied 2014 HL thread came out... it looks like nothing more than a Gen 2.7 & 1/2 to me! I have concerns about that "new" six speed transmission. I think it was Sweeney that posted it's the same transmission that's in the Sienna (sorry if it wasn't you Sweeney). If so, check out the AWD Sienna's gas ratings... NO THANKS!!!

^ :rofl2:

It was me, but I'm not positive its the same. Toyota has a track record of reusing transaxles and engines between models. The media packet didn't say exactly what transaxle, but it said 6 speed and it shares the AWD system of a lot of other models. So that makes me think its the U660# series.

Here is what have the transaxle I think its going to be in it (E is FWD & F is AWD)

U660E
6 Speed Automatic Transaxle (V6)
Application:
2006 - 2008 Toyota Estima (ACR50) 3.5L
2007– Toyota Camry (V6)
2007– Lexus ES 350
2007– Toyota Aurion (V6)
2008- Toyota Avalon
2009- Toyota Venza
2010– Lexus RX350
2011- Toyota Sienna
U660F
Application:
2009-Present Toyota Venza AWD
2009-Present Toyota RAV4 D-CAT A/T
2010-Present Lexus RX 350 AWD
2011 Toyota Sienna AWD

Looks like they lowered the roof line like the Odyssey. Need to dump the chrome wheels and put on some running boards. I didn't see the Limited badge on the one pictured. I wish the would dump the JBL system and go with Bose. There are a few nice interior upgrades, but it is obviously geared toward the female driver.

I bought a 2014 Highlander Platinum 3000 Km's ago. It is a huge piece of junk! Yes, I said junk...every time I drive, it gives me road rage. The 270 hp engine trying to drag around 500 lb is not good enough. When driving in manual and forcing low gear driving it is most impressive. But, when in transmission is in auto mode it is a lazy turtle. It is actually scary trying to navigate traffic in auto transmission mode. Maybe it isa not so much the engine power as it is the way it is set up!!
And don't get me started on the NAV, stereo, bluetooth etc... functionality... It's like Toyota went out of their way to make the most useless electronic device with the worse interface.
Otherwise it is a nice vehicle.
