Coolant Reservoir / Radiator cap

Is the coolant reservoir sealed? Mine was replaced and it seems I remember that the cap had a casket. I'm wondering if it needs to be sealed to work properly. The level never changes. I just changed the radiator cap because the old one disintegrated. My temperature gauge fluctuated a little + or - a little off of center. With the new cap, it seems to get hotter than with the old cap. I'm over cautious regarding overheating because of head bolt issues in the series. 2003 Camry. There also seem to be air in system because of gurgling under the dash. I'm guessing air got in because of a bad radiator cap.

thanks

NO. The cooling system would not function as designed if it was not open to atmosphere. Coolant expands as it is heated and has to have somewhere to go, which is the coolant reservoir, surge tank or whatever it is cooled. The radiator cap is a TWO-Way valve and has two "caskets." Look at it closely and you will see the two sealing surfaces. When coolant returns to ambient, it takes up less volume and coolant is returned to the cooling system through the radiator cap because of atmospheric pressure. Regards
