Hello all, just curious what brands you guys would recommend for both. I called the dealer and they want $40 for the cabin filter and 30 for the engine filter. I think thats excessive but not sure what brands you guys think are best.

thanks in advance.

Cheap air filters may have much less filter medium than premium one do, so have a shorter lifetime.

You might save money if non-carbon is available.

The risk with rubbish air filters is poor filtration or poor airflow.
Even Toyota filters these days can have much less filter medium than previously, as the depth of the air filter has decreased significantly....and the savings of the air filter cost isn't given to the customer.

I tend to just by whatever the local auto parts place has, although I had bought a batch of carbon filter cabin filters off Amazon some time back and finally ran through those so will be stocking back up. I have not had any issues with the Fram or STP engine filters, been using them for decades in many different vehicles.

OEM for the air filter.
Cabin filter? Meh... OEM is convenient to order when I order the engine air filter, and ordering from most dealers that sell online, the price is comparable to local generics.
If I went to Walmart with my wife when she goes shopping, I would just buy the Fram filters there, but I do everything I can to avoid going shopping with her :D

I got an oem Denso on Amazon for the engine filter. In my opinion it has better fitment. Cabin air filter I still haven't quite figured out my happy place yet. I had an oem filter that seemed to have thinner pleats allowing more airflow, on the other hand I currently have a EP auto brand charcoal activated in but noticed it has thicker filter pleats and also doesn't allow the air flow that the OE one did. The only reason I got the charcoal one is mine and the family's allergies get really bad. I'm considering going back to oem or something similar because I feel that the better air flow is more important to me and in the end it's still a filter filtering the air coming into the cabin.

For about $10 more for each you can go to a K&N washable/reusable filter. The K&N air filter provides superior flow characteristics and has proven to increase performance and fuel economy by between 3 and 4%. K&N recommends you wash and apply the filter element oil to them every 50,000 miles under normal conditions and less under extremely dusty circumstances. Available from Auto parts stores, AMAZON or WALMART. They appear to be fair trade items and I've never seen them discounted.

They have been tested against other brands of filters by an unbiased individual and his procedures and results were posted on a Face Book program. I have used them in my own personal cars for years and while I was unable to perceive any performance change I was able to determine a modest increase in mpg. As far as air flow is concerned, you're talking thru your hat and spouting nonsense. I had over 200K miles on my 2004 Echo. The bulk of those miles with a K&N air filter. It burned no more oil than when it was new. I swapped the K&N from my 2016 Corolla S to the 2018 XSE when I traded for it and would have swapped it again if it had fit my Avalon.

Take an original, unmolested car.
Drive it 5,000 miles and send an oil sample in for analysis.
Install a K&N, drive it 5,000 miles and send an oil sample in for analysis.

The silicon levels will increase dramatically.
I've seen engines with less than 100,000 on them, factory crosshatching still very apparent, with severe scoring of the cylinder walls.

But it's always nice to see another new K&N shill find the forum.

Cabin filter : EP Auto charcoal from Amazon. Seems to do a decent job and I just replace at least once a year.

Engine air filter: I've either done the Toyota OEM or Spectre Essentials (regular - non-oiled filter) https://amzn.to/3HCWp3A Not that I believe the marketing claims on the listing, but it fits, feels, weighs, and seems to filter as well as the OEM filter. I also replace it more often than recommended (every other oil change).

In the cabin filter the carbon is for odor control and won't affect airflow. Air flow is affected by combination of the micron rating, Ie the largest particles it will capture, and total surface area. HEPA captures the smallest particles so needs more surface (more pleats) for the same airflow but would be best for allergies.
