Ive had a few of the original OE head units and they were all crapped out / made the speakers sound like they were blown.... Turned out the speakers were fine, and the head units were at fault. Threw in a cheap Alpine unit and the speakers worked fine.
There's a chance the speakers are fine (despite being like almost 40 years old)
if you plan to get an aftermarket head unit head unit, id replace that first before the speakers.
The speakers aren't hard to do, but they're just more time consuming than a regular speaker replacement as 71 said you need to do some work to get aftermarkets to fit..... assuming you want it to look nice / factory. Most people around here used to just cut some holes and shove some 6x9s out back of these 2nd gens.
