How to clean Mass Air Flow sensor on 2017 Highlander?

I was getting check engine and check AWD lights so I looked up the OBD P0171 and P0174 codes. Apparently there are multiple causes that could set this code so I started with the Mass Air Flow sensor which was cleaned by the dealer at 30,000 miles and now I'm at 45,000 miles with similar problem. I am surprised this occurred at 30,000 mile and also surprised the dealer charged me to clean it.

I removed the MAF sensor and sprayed into any openings I could find on the MAF with CRC contact cleaner 3x. Is the this the correct way to clean it or does it come apart? On some MAF cleaning videos you can actually see the elements inside, but on this Toyota MAF. Something tells me I'm going to have to clean it again.

I cleared the codes and after a few days the codes came back for 2 drives, then went way permanently (I Hope). Did it take a few drives because the computer had to re-trim the fuel adjustment based upon the clean MAF reading? Just curious.

Thanks

I used to do this cleaning on an annual basis with my old Matrix due to all the pollution here in the Toronto area. It sounds like you did it right. I used to use ABS sensor safe brake cleaner without any trouble at all. It was cheaper than the fancy contact cleaners and it did the same job. If the code comes back then two things to check:
1. Make sure the electrical connector to the MAF sensor is plugged in properly and no wire damage. Also spray some contact cleaner inside this connector.
2. Make sure you sprayed the true MAF element inside the sensor. It’s not the bulb looking thing you see, that’s the temperature sensor (see red arrow in my photo). The actual MAF part is down inside the hole. You’ll see a wire mesh type element (yellow arrow in photo).

Hope this helps. Also, usually when I clean the MAF, I change the air filter, and wash out the air box and air hose. Sometimes gunk and dirt gets in there.

Funny I had the same thing about a month and a half ago with the same codes, and I too have a 2017. I got some CRC Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner, sprayed the thing..put it back in and it seemed good for about an hour before the light came back on. I brought it to the dealer a few days later, and after they cleared those same codes as you did, they sent me on my way saying they couldn't find anything. wrong. It's been running great ever since, so maybe it just takes a little bit.

  1. Key OFF
  2. Buy MAF cleaner & throttle cleaner
  3. Remove MAF
  4. Spray MAF cleaner into MAF
  5. Have someone assist you or place an heavy object on the accelerator pedal
  6. This will actuate the throttle open to allow you to clean it
  7. Clean/brush throttle with throttle cleaner
  8. Reinstall everything
  9. Unhook battery for more than 90 seconds
  10. Start car (it won't start)
  11. Start car again

The MAF sensor is part of the emissions package. The emissions equipment is covered by law, sometimes past the new car warranty limits. I think 45,000 miles is below that limit. I had another make years ago, and the module that flashes the check engine light when reaching a certain mileage came on early. It was part of emissions. A dealer fixed it per the warranty with no charge at 45,000 miles.
