Range Shown in Instrument Cluster, is it accurate?

How accurate is this display? Other cars I've had give a low fuel around 40-50 miles to empty and then when below 20 miles stops showing a range estimate. I've assumed so that no one sues the OEM for running out of fuel when it said "1 mile to empty", because you know someone would. This is why I was surprised when the low fuel warning doesn't come on until 12 miles to empty on my '17 Highlander and eventually showed 3 miles to empty (wife sent me a picture while in line for gas). Yes I know vehicles shouldn't be run so low on fuel which is why I'm shocked with the overall nanny approach Toyota takes on all other vehicle systems that it doesn't add some sort of padding or reserve for those who take it to the limit.

Toyota's DTE calculation seems more conservative than most. I bet when your wife filled up the tank in that situation, she still put in a gallon or 2 less than the tank capacity even thought the DTE display showed just 3 miles. That's the only way to know for sure - look how much fuel it took to fill the tank completely and compared to the fuel tank capacity.
