Vibration when stopped and in Drive

I have changed most of the ignition components, but still have a vibration when stopped and in gear. Its a little worst when AC compressor is on.
I have changed a couple of engine mounts -- "dogbone" and the one right at the front. Changing the one at he front with a non-OEM made things worst. When the car shifts gear it seems to jerk into the new gear.
The car is a 2001 model and has new tires.
I realize that it could be many things, but how does one go about diagnosing the problem ?
Vibration goes away when changed to Neutral.

Most likely you need all your motor mount replaced and as you have personally experienced, aftermarket mounts can make the symptom worse. This topic has been discussed countless times and the only common resolution is new Toyota motor mounts. Do a search and see for yourself. Your next question will likely be, who has the best price on Toyota motor mounts? While this is no paid endorsement, Toyota of Cool Springs had the best pricing last time I checked. They are a TN Sponsor and Roman is as good as they come, but please do shop around.

Its a 4 cylinder and I have had it for more than 10 years. I bought it used.

OEM motor mounts for this car are very expensive.
Given that its a 2001, it would be nice to pinpoint one of the 4 possible mounts as a suspect and replace just that. Replacing all four at this stage begs the question of whether to replace with a newer model.

Used OEMs may be OK, but again I cannot test them to see if they have the same problem.

Your best bet to get the OEM mounts at reasonable prices is probably to contact one of our site vendors, Roman @ToyotaOfCoolSprings. Yeah, they'll always be more expensive than aftermarket but aftermarkets are almost universally panned as garbage.

Aftermarket mounts are junk. I've ran into it many many times. Usually, the dog bone, the front mount, or the rear mount goes out, or any combination of the three. Also, once one goes out, it puts added stress on the other mounts, causing them to deteriorate faster.

I am assuming your car is an automatic. If it's a manual, let me know. I'll have to get you some different part numbers.

I've had the same exact issue for years (at least 12 years), with my 2001 Camry 5S-FE 4 cylinder.

I've had to replace motor mounts three times over the years... Yes new mounts will help, but you may find it doesn't solve the problem of the vibrating. The dealer did an "induction service" last summer for me (I think it was a fuel system cleaner, throttle body treatment, etc.), that helped to smooth things about a bit by cleaning things up a bit and removing carbon deposits from the throttle body, intake, etc. I believe. They even tightened down my hood as that actually had come a bit loose after all the vibrating. I actually had a shop tell me at one point that I must have been driving the car hard to crack those motor mounts and not sure he believed me when I told him I'm very easy on the car...I want to keep it for years. Nearing 167,000 miles.

I'll be curious if your motor mounts are cracked, and hopefully you'll be able to replace them, or confirm they're in good shape. Either way, if its like my 2001, that may not necessarily be the only problem.

I've recently started using a bit of 2-cycle TC-W3 in my fuel tank (1 oz. per 5 gallons), and waiting to see if that helps remove any carbon build up throughout the fuel system, and see if that helps settle things down a bit. Either way, whether I stay with the TC-W3 or go back to another fuel system cleaner...I'm a true believer to do what I can help keep the system as clean and free of carbon buildup as I can.

May want to take a look at this thread:

If primary general 'tune-up' components have been replaced (plugs, wires, air filter), then would suggest beginning with cleaning Throttle Body and the IACV,

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/1...549-official-gen-3-4-camry-gen-1-solara-diy-general-information-faq-thread.html

Checking condition of all vacuum hoses in the engine compartment, looking for dry cracking, color changes / glazing, or cracks near, or at, any VSV or component vacuum port (including the brake booster hose),

Opening up and verifying the air box / Intake system is free and clear of obstruction, the filter is good, all hoses from the air box -> to the Throttle Body and resonator are intact, secure, and in good condition,

Consider changing the PCV valve - as a maintenance / diagnostic step,

Consider changing the fuel filter - as a maintenance / diagnostic step, and running a fuel system cleaner with a high Regane content: such as Techron Plus, or Gumout High Mileage system cleaner,

* And checking electrical: Battery terminals, cables, and ground points: poor grounds will make the engine idle poorly under load.. Tip: if you see any apparent voltage-drop, e.g.: headlamps dim, when operating power windows, turning on cabin blower motor, etc. - I would clean those primary ground points, and consider replacing the battery terminals as needed..

* Performing normal fluid maintenance on the transmission, and differential, would also be a great idea, big +1 w/ BMR - that helped here also.

If above seems like a lot, it is.. when we received the '00 Camry, it had the same idle issue(s) described, above covers the maintenance steps involved to remedy the idle issue, here.

Hope the info helps.

Hi, I am the guy that pushes TCW3. I have been using it in my Infiniti and Camry for 5 years. It will clean out your emissions parts over time. I seafoamed both of my cars about 9 months ago and no excessive smoke came out the exhaust like in the youtube videos. It will also lower your smog emissions noticeably. I run it currently in my 2014 Rav 4.
