Hi,

I'm wondering if this install is normal on my Camry. It's an after-market Walker muffler.

See how the muffler is tilted sideways?

The shop said it's the best they can do with the Walker muffler and resonator installed. However, I'm not happy with the looks of it. Is this typical of Walker mufflers on my generation of Camry?

Thanks.

Dear life of Camrys...

That is horrible.

I've seen some crooked mufflers like that on other cars. I've never knew why...maybe that the reason.

I would be honeslty OCD about it and be losing sleep. I would confirm if the part number is the one for the car.

This is what I got. Might want to double check walker site based off your specs though.

Walker Part Numbers

Hi. I checked under the car with a flashlight a few days ago and the part numbers match. It's 2003, though, and I was able to compare them to the parts diagram on the Walker website.

Walker hasn't responded to my inquiry when I sent the picture through their online tech form. Even after sending it 2 times over the course of a week. Yesterday I contacted a staff member of the company that owns Walker, Tenneco, via email. I also sent him the picture.

I'm like you. I just can't accept the way it looks. The tech at the shop said things like, "Well, it has 150,000 miles on it". I replied, "Yeah, it has half of it's life left".

Hopefully either Tenneco or someone from Walker will get back to me.

Thanks for sending me the diagram and for helping me out with the issue.

No problem.

I would assume since the parts are not a 'cut to fit' as these parts are made specifically for the 2002-2006 2AZ Camry that it should line up...unless something was bent via shipping and they didn't know about it.

i'm just ocd enough i'd have my local guy cut out the muffler and weld it back on straight since it will be seen by everyone approaching you from behind.

I've had several stainless Walker mufflers on my 350K 99 and been pleased. They've all hung right. The Walker center pipe for the car is also good quality but may need a little fine tuning, bolts loosened and the unit rehung, on sometimes a torch is used to heat and bend the pipe to the correct position. How the center pipe hangs depends in part on what's on the engine side, the converter flange to center pipe must be in the correct position. Walker is about as close to OEM as you can come without paying Toyota prices.

Yea, usually walker goes on fine without much issue so this is something new to me.

Could be that the mechanic who put it on had it slightly crooked (even thought it might have been able to be mounted straight) and to him or her, it was no big deal "Ah! As long it's there that's all that matters, it's a 13 year old car with 150,000 miles, I don't care, doesn't bother me, NEXT!"

Me personally, I'm so OCD it would bother me too. I'd go to another shop and have it cut and re-welded straight (which should be possible). If not, then I'd get OEM parts. Actually, that's probably what I'd do in the first place, even though Walker is a pretty good name in exhaust parts. I'm sure it was meant to go on straight, but the mechanic putting it on couldn't care less if it was straight or a bit crooked. Everyone has his or her own level of tolerance for this, or OCD. It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't care and thinks it's fine because they don't see it as a big deal and can't understand why you're making a big deal out of it.

Note to self... if I need to change my exhaust, get OEM and request that it be mounted straight! My car is also 13 years old and in absolute mint condition. Nothing bothers me more than when I go someplace for parts or service and when they hear is a 2003, they say "well, you probably don't want too spend to much on it, this way is cheaper, or I'd just leave it." Then I get really offended and say "Why, do you think it's a POS or something?" Some people get it and some don't. The ones that don't never will. Some will go along with you and do what it takes to make you happy once they know it's important to you.

Anyways, best of luck with this!

How do you like the performance and sound of that walker muffler?

I put a Walker SS muffler on my V6 Solara a few months ago. The exhaust note makes the vehicle sound like a tin can when accelerating hard. Almost like a 4 cylinder economy car. The OEM muffler had a deeper, more confident sound. The diameter is significantly smaller than OEM as well.

Hmm interesting. I thought the walker one looked smaller compared to the 03 I4 stock OEM one.

Odd thing is that the Avalon has a walker exhaust - at lease my friends 1997 had 'walker' stamp on it and it sounds fine.

If you want "perfection", go OEM. If you want cost effective and works the same, go aftermarket. I am also OCD on some things on my car but I've learned to forget it. Exhaust is slightly off center? Won't care since no one is gonna look underneath the car. If you want more "perfection" either fix the car yourself or learn to be happy that your car is fixed.
